Let him who is inclined to take a gloomy view of the outlook for busi ness ponder well these-facts: While the United States lias only 5 per cent of the world's -population, it produces 20 per cent of the world's wheat, 25 per cent of its gold, 33 per cent of its coal, 35 per cent of its manufactures, 3 per cent of its silver, 40 per cent of its iron, 42 per cent of its steel, 52 per cent of its petroleum, 55 per cent of its copper, 70 per cent of its cotton and 80 per cent of its coin. Ex. A Sixty thousand aliens leaving our shores in one week after half that numlier had departed the proceed ing week, makes quite novel reading and is perhaps a little humiliating to the patriotic .American who lte lieves that his country is the nation par excellence on the face of the glolx But the figures have their gratifying aspect, for they indicate that our modern .cheap and quick means of transportation will in the future act as a sort of industrial bal ance wheel or safety valve. Periods of industrial depression will find us less hampered than of old with an over-supply of workers, while the tendency of the new-comers to slip back home at the first sign of indus trial slackening may very easily prevent the slackening from becom ing a stoppage. Salem Statesman. A Michigan editor grew tired of wielding the whitewash brush in the matter of obituaries and decided to reform and tell the truth just for once. He commented as follows upon the death of a well known citizen: "Died aged 5C years, G months and 13 days. Deceased was a mild mannered pirate with a mouth for whiskey and an eye for boodle. He came here in the night with another man's wife and joined the church at the first oppor tunity. He owed us several dollars for the paper and a large meat bill and you could hear him pray six blocks. He died singing "Jesus paid it all" and we supose He did for he never paid anything' himself. He was buried in an aslestos casket and his many friends threw palm leaves into the grave for he may need them. His tombstone will be a favorite roosting place for hoot owls." A Times man has had a ride on the Corvallis & Alsea railroad, ft was on a hand car, and from a point near Mary's river to a spot about 100 yards south of the old Southern Pacific depot' building. The track is now laid for that distance, hut further progress is now temporarily delayed until the. span of the Mary's river bridge can lie completed.' The north end of the new track Ix'gins at a point 100 yards south of the depot where it connects with the Southern Pacific siding. For the present, all the construction force is engaged in framing the span for the bridge, a work, that will require some time. After it is in position, the " tracklaying will be resumed. Enpugh ties, iron and piling is on hand to complete the road the entire distance covered by the grade, which ends four miles this side of Monroe. Grading will not le resumed until the weather settles in the spring. Corvallis Times. There is nothing to it, when it conies to growing potatoes in Ore gon. Here is one in the Times oflice that weighs six and one half pounds. It was grown on the Clyde Beach farm, a mile east of Corvallis. Twelve individual potatoes in the lot weighed a bushel. Several weighed six pounds each. The soil is a loam, located on high bottom land.
