Lincoln County Leader. CHARLES F. SOULE, ADA E. SOULE, HOPKIBTORB. ; Official County Paper. Entered at the potofflce at Toledo. Oregon as aeeonoMjlaaa mail matter. ' "reg"n M SUBSCRIPTION RATES One 1 ear t v Six Months - 1 fb Three Months - - m LEADERLETS Fourteen hundred timber claim en tries in Colorado were cancelled a few uaB aeo. Bnllv ! go on 1 . Tbe demand for more space at the ! Lewis and Clark Fair continues. High-headed easterners who expect this to he a little single-ring affair will be victims of a surprise party. Dressed turkeys are 25 cents per pound in Portland, w ith prospects of a rise. However, the quality is said to be "better than ever," and that will in a measure counteract the legal-tender flavor. Tersonal Frank Baker, of whom a few Republicans and all leading Demo crats in Oregon are insanely envious, will arrive tomorrow at his home in l'ortland from a visit to the National capital. A Japanese fleet of 40 war vessels has started out to meet the more or less famous Russian Baltio fleet, and the greatest naval battle of the war is expected to occur within a few day9. P. S. So savs a cablegram from Tokio. The Russian government has placed orders for several thousand tons of American hay, as a hint that the war with Japan is' far from' ended. The combination will not be complete until Russia purchases teveral thousand Mis souri mules. A Portland "gentleman" was per mitted to leave a hospital for a couple of hours last Sunday and visit his wife. The invalid husband gave his loving wife a good beating and returned to the hospital, much benefitted by the beau tiful Sabbath day outing. On the face of the returns the gov ernor elect of Colorado is a Democrat. After he has been "duly inducted" into office he will be kept busy for awhile pardoning out of the penitentiary the proiuiuont citiaens who rouuded up for him the necessary votes. During the 11 mouths ending Novem ber HO Portland held second pluco as a wheat-shipping port, Galveston being flrst and New Orleans third. Of the 12,219,173 bushels exported during this' period 5,877,511 bushels went from Porthiud, Pnget Sound and San Fran cisco. In the near future a stream of oil will be started via the pipe line from the Indian Territory oil fields for the Standard Oil compauy's refineries in New York and New Jersey. Yos, gen tle reader, the belief that this method .f transportation will bring down the price of oil is only a pipe dream. There is no objection whatever to giving Hitchcock whatever credit he may merit us h public ouIuihI, but a large per cout of the people of Oregon believe he carries a well-developed vein of something akin to cussedness, and they must not bo expected to fall down and worship him. for having been in strumental in bringing a few laud sharks to justice. Senator Mitchell . and Congressman llermanu are scheduled to arrive in Portland tomorrow. , Their names hav ing been paraded jmthO.,laud frauds in vestigation, they ;lvW:, decided to come home and demaud a bill of particulars. It's a safe guess thoy will he found guilty of loyalty to Oregon and their constituents, which, in the eyes of Hitchcock, is probably a crime. Rev. W. S. Raiusford, D. D, rector Of St. George's Protest aut Episcopal fhurch of New York, says ministers' wives are failures. One of the latter, us is perfectly nntural, has rushed into print with a vigorous contradiction of the noted divine's assertion. But that doesn't settle it. The question now is: Who is right, Dr. Rainsford or the offended minister's wife? One or the t.ther is certainly "it." The crusudo against cigarettes in Or gou will probably result in some sense less legislation. Oregon's present , law prohibits the sale of tobacco or cigar ettes to boys under 18, but they got the stuff just the same, and boys not more than one-half that ago may be seen emokii'g cigarettes in nearly every town in the st-tte. Cigarettes will be smoked while wholesale aud retail tobacco dealers coutinne to handle tho material of which they ate made; aud boys will smoke them as long as they can find real, growu-up men who are willing to give' them the material or purchase it or them. KaOTT C. EGBERT Supt. and Special Disbursing Agent, In Charge of Siletz Agoncy, Oregon. Good evening! Has Hitchcock got you on his list? "Whon Portland Has Her Fair" is the title of a poem or something in the Sunday Oregouian. The name of the father of the effort Is either wisely or moJestly suppressed. A wise magazine writer boldly de clares that women are human beings. Susceptible, romantic and enthusiastic young men will continue to believe that "just one girl" is an angel. The town of Gresham, Or., wants a lawyer, but he must be a good singer, quiililied to instruct would-be warblers. Any community wishing to lose such a citizen may communicate with the Gresham town council. Tho big Rw-sian battleship Sevas topol, after being torpedoed ten times by the Japanese fleet blockading Port Arthur, seems to bo slightly out of trim. P. S. So says a cablegram from Tokio. The Oregonian quotes "wormy" np ples in Portland at 25 50 cents per bos. Wormy apples should have no place in the market, unless Portland eoustimers prefer that brand. If thoy don't want worms they should encour age the fruit dealers to handle only the wormless apples of Lincoln county. "I was much allliotnd with sciatica," writes Ed C Nud, Iowaville, Sedgwick Co., Kan., "going about on crutches and suffering a deal of pain. I was In duced to try Ballard's Suow Liniment, which relieved me. I have used three 50c bottles. It is tbe greatest liniment I ever used ; all express themselves as being beuefited by it. I now walk without crutches, ablo to perforin a great deal of light labor on tho farm." 52c, 50, f 1. For sale by Otto 0. Krog stad, Druggijst.. The Editor's Gentleman. The question always comes up: what is a gentleman? Some say he is a mau with a silk hat, and others a man with a smooj tongue. But men connected with the newspaper trade have a can non of their own. "Mr. Editor," said a patron one day, "how is it you never call on me to pay for your pypbr?'' "Oli," said the man of types, "we never ask a gontleman for money." "Indeed !' the patron replied. ''How do you manage to gel along when they dou't pay?" "Why." eaid Mr. Editor, 'after a certaiu time we conclude he is not a gentleman, aud we ask him." London Mail. Coughing Spell Caused Death.
