Tlie platform of the Iowa Democrats repeats the charge that a protective polioy is the parent of trusts. This statement was especially blatant when iLecoal btiiko of 1SC2 ilnootcucj to bring npon the country a dreadful fuei famine. Congress removed the duty on coal and the article could then come in free from all parts of the World. Bos ton is near the Canadian mines, and should have been benefited by free coal, if the claims made for it were true. Senator Lodge has pointed out in a speech that the price of coal remained the same. Consumers in Boston were not helped to the extent of a penny by the removal of the duty nor was any advantage noticed in other cities. When the duty was tuken oft on this side of the ocean, the price of coal for shipment was correspondingly marked np on the other 6ide. American con sumers made nothing by the change. At the end of the year prescribed the duty again became operative, and with out Increasing the cost of coal in this country. If the duty on ooal had not been re moved when a coal famine was impend ing there would have been a tremend ous hue and cry about a "robber tariff" and its parentage of the coal trust. Statistics would have been showered upon the people assuming to show that the duty on coal would be a sure cure for all the evils of the situation. Iowa Democrats have plunged anew Into talk of that sort, piling up the agony about u tariff system creating and fostering . the truUs. No doubt that gammon will be plentiful among Democratic speak rs this year. Intelligent persons will lt't it pass for the empty rant that it is Not one known fact warrants the charge.
