The New Year.
There is every present assurance
that the year 1902 will be a happy
and prosperous one for the people
of this country. The fortunate con
ditions which have "characterized
the closing year still continue dom
inant. They have provided abund
ant capital for commercial and in
dustrial activities unless unforeseen
emergencies arise, and to withstand
these better than ever before.vThey
have equipped the laboring man so
that he is better able to enjoy the
good things of life. They have
taught capital and labor their mu
tual dependence and led them to
consider plans whereby differences
may be adjusted without financial
loss to either. Finally, thoy have
done much to cement capital and
labor into a commercial unit for the
successful invasion of the foreign
market, and have so far destroyed
political lines that, in its relations
to other countries, the United
States is a Nation more than a con
federation of States. The fortunate
conditions of 1901 have done more
for the real salvation of this coun
try than can now be easily esti
mated. There is every reason to
believe, too, that during the coming
year we shall reap some fruits of
many labors in the fields of eco
nonncs, sciences and arts. The
study given to practical questions
of how best to live is certain soon
to be productive of better conditions
The application of inventions and
discoveries to practical uses, brings
comforts within the reach of the
many. The invasion of even the
homes of the poor by art in one
form or another, insures a greater
degree of refinement. The more
'abundant facilities for gaining edu
cation, open to the child of humblest
parentage, promise a more intel
ligent consideration of the obliga
tions and duties of life. In these
respects, it is better that we have
lived in 1901 than in 1900 even, as
slight as has beeu the improvement;
and it will have been still better
that we have lived in 1902, the
second year in the new century,
which holds out to ira so much of
advancement in all that makes life
worth living. There is every rea
sou why we can and should greet
the new year with happy hearts.
Pennsylvania Grit.
Now that the holiday rush is
over, every citizen of Oregon who
is interested should petition Con
pressman Tongue and Senator Si
mon to put on a line of steamers to
carry the products of the Willam
ette valley and tributary territory
out of Yaquina harbor. Of course
these statesmen will also be ex
pected to convey said products to
the aquina docks.
The Oregonian's New Year num
ber is considered by many to be the
best ever issued by that great
paper. It covers a great deal more
territory than its predecessors and
should be of much benefit to the
great Pacific Northwest.
There is some satisfaction in
knowing that one brute always gets
licked and sometimes killed in a
prize fight. Uockford Register.
The Albany Herald got out a
very creditable holiday number and
was "sooner" than anybody. Tho
Herald is enterprising.
The Salem Statesman issues a
splendid holiday number. We have
