In appearance the machine Is merely
ordinary phonograph, with a large
trumpet measuring four feet In length.
Intddc this trumpet there is a small and
delicate piece of mechanism that looks
something like a whistle. This Is the
tongue of the machine.
Instead of the 'records" he'ng taken
on wax in the usual manner a sapphire
needle is made lo cut the dots repre
senting the sound vibrations on a silver
cylinder, and when the needle travels
over the metal a second time the vibra
tions cause the whistle to produce a
series of air waves, and the machine
thus becomes a talking siren which
iniiislorms the human voice Into a
deafening roar.
The experiments-were made near the
lievil's dyke, Brighton, where the In
ventor had his workshops. The instru
ment was placed ou the roof of the la
boratory and was made to repeat a
number of sentences. At a distance of
en miles the sounds were plainly heard
by n large number of people, every
word being perfectly distinct, and at a
Micond trial witli a favorable wind it
was found that an unknown message
could be taken down In shorthand at a
instance of twelve miles. Over the wa
ter the sounds will carry still further,
and under favorable circumstances
they might easily be heard by persons
on a vessel fifteen miles out at sea.

the oil where the woodwork is very
much soiled. Let this remain two or
three hours; this is to soften the dirt.
Theu wash with soap and water and a
soft cloth, -being careful not to let any
water touch the works inside the piano.
Use a good white or a white Castile
soap. Wipe dry with a soft cloth and
polish with soft old linen or chamois

Evert Jansen Wendell is a blue
blooded kuickerbocker, a member of
one of the oldest New York families
and rich. He is known all over New
York as the. "best friend of bad boys."
He carries on a correspondence with no
less than 2,000 boys who at one time
most people would put under the cate
gory of "bad." Mr. Wendell has been
instrumental in placing all the boys
with whom be corresponds on western
farms or in western villages.
William Dean Ilowells has become
something of yachtsman and has a lit
tle boat of his own in which he delights
to cruise about Long Island sound.

keepers who kept open their saloons
after tho village had voted local op
tion, claiming that the by-law was in
valid, have.lost their case before the
c'ourt, and have closed up their places.

Four Americans were discussing the
absurdities of the French coinage sys
tem in the conopara'nent of a railway
