Mr Jeffrey is by long odds the best populist speaker the local democrats have produced during the campaign. ' While he is rather voune. and his oratnrv is yet of the schoolboy style, he puts up. a very plausible argument. He is, in fact, a precocious youth. We have neither time nor space at this late hour to trace his talk from be ginning to end. It's strength lay in what . he didn't say, and was principally on imperialism. He gloried in Dewey's naval victory at I Manila; he thought it was perfectly (proper tor our troops at a later ray j to capture the city; he referwd to j tfie Filipinos as our allies in that fijlht. He forirot to tell int Wv I they were our allies; he forgot to . j ..... .. .. ,,, ... . ...... . . . "u nn- iiiuci n.aii iiujJJ? null .-.11. from Jooting and destruction, which real good time had been promised them by Aguinaldo in one of his characteristic proclamations; he for got to mention the fact that Agui naldo had sold out to Spain and was living in luxury at Hong Kong .when Dewey received orders to proceed to Manila and destroy or capture the Spanish fleet; he forgot to mention the fact that the Fili pinos were .the aggressors that they fired upon our troops before the treaty with Spain was consum mated, and while they were vet subjects of Spam; he forgot to state inaune ruipinos never gave our 1 government an opportunity to as sist them m establishing a govern ment of their own; he forgot to mention a few of the many barbar. qus acts committed by the Tagals, under the approval of Aguinaldo, which prove them to be unfit for self-government. He persistently held out the idea that the republic an party is no longer in favor of a republican form of government. He even got so reckless as to state that republican newspapers were begin ning to advocate a monarchical government. The Leader chal lenges Mr. Jeffrey or. any other, man to point to a single newspaper that gives expression to such a sen timent. He said the law in North Carolina which disfranchised ' the illiterate negro also disfranchised the illiterate white man. If he is posted, he knows better. The law or amended consiitution of North Carolina deprives no white man e 1. - . 1 . . .v UllJ lllllli who wants proof of this assertion can easily get it. He also made some wild assertions regarding the constitutions of other states, which we haven't space to consider this week. He denied the right of the pieseut administration to take any credit whatever for the present pros perity, and then said it was ' 'bor rowed prosperity," anyhow. He failed to make himself clear on this point. If he meant the country is prosperous because of the bonds re funded by the present administra tion, why didn't he explain why we were not prosperous under the last democratic administration and its big bond issues? He called Presi dent McKinley a traitor, ridiculed Roosevelt, and declared at least a dozen 'times that they would be turned down hard or words to that effect on the 6th of next month. The Leader will devcte a little more space 'to Mr. Jeffrey next week. He is a real nice young man and deserves more than passing notice. During his stay in Toledo lie was chaperoned by J. W. Par rish, chairman of the populist cen tral committee, who gracefully in troduced him to the audience. . The Toledo band furnished ex cellent music during the evening. w IUC lltliil lO Vll f nnH on, tnnti Who is What? McKee, Or., Oct. 22. Editor Statesman: 1 900. In your issue of Oct. 1 6th is pub lished a report from Woodburn, dated Oct. 15H1, which states that John A. Jeffrey, "Populist,", had addressed a small number at that place on Saturday afternoon. The correction, as noted above, is this: All Populists want it understood now and henceforth forever, that all men who are now drilling with the Democratic party for the success nf V r VI 1 1 ntiil Qtat.fiH.Mi ..1 1 wilh the Democrat,.. th e ot regarded as Populists by any means. The Populist National Con vention was held in Cincinnati. Ohio, and not in Sioux Falls; as the "deputies" would have us be lieve, and Barker and Donnelly are the candidates of the Popnli, t party, and every Populist will vote for them in the coming election. The Tempest-in-the-teapot party, composed of the Oregon Independ ent, J. A. Jeffrey, J. P. Robertson, John M. Payne, T. C. Jory, G. W. Weeks & Co. will not succeed in their little game of shoving the Populist party down the Democratic throat. Let every Ponulist turn out to the election and volc the Populist ticket. G.W.Vedder. "One day last winter a lady came to my drug store and nskedfora .. brand of cough medicine that I did: not have in stock,"' says Mr. C. R. Grandin, the popular druggist of ' Ontario, N. Y. "She was disap-" pointed and wanted to know what cough preparation I could recom mend. I said to her that I could freely recommend Chamberlain's Cough Remedy and that she could take a bottle of the remedy and after giving it a fair trial if .she did not find it worth the money to bring back the bottle and I would refund the price paid. In the course of a day or two the lady came back in company with a friend in need of a cough medicine and advised her to buy a bottle of Chamberlain's Cough Rerredy. I consider that a very good recommendation for the rem edy." It Is for sale by O. O. Krog stad, druggist. 1 I 1 V
