Many Americans leave home to go to Europe every year to see sights which are discounted by those at home. They express great wonder at the cg railway up the liigi Kulm which runs a distance of 4 ' miles, while by go ing to Pikes' peak they may t ide on one 8-4 miles long. The ascent of the former is 4.0T2 feet, that of the latter is 8,100 feet, an average of 84 H feet per mile, the maximum grade being l,:j:20 leet. Experiments made by Professor .Toly show that quart, at the temperature of 800 degrees becomes plastic, and at 1600 degrees is a thick Hind. This softening point is much slower tlmu baa contouly been supposed, and the discovery gives encouragement to the hope of a wide use for quartz in scien tific apparatus. FROM SOCIETY TO SLUMS. A Wealthy Society Girl Who Devotes Her Life to the Poor. Wealth, home comforts and every luxury money can acquire have no at traction for Miss Mae Brown, the bountiful daughter of John Crosby Brown, millionaire banker and member of the titin of Brown Broth ers, New York. Miss Brown can shine In New York society as few women can. But society has no charm for her since one day two years ago, .when she had occasion to visit the East Side. There she saw sights that wrung her heart. Helpless little children lying about the streets, poorly clad, half-starved mothers, some ill, all unhappy, were new to Miss Brown. After arriving- at her home Miss Brown declared that her mission In life was to be a trained nurse and to help the poor and suffering. No ar gument could persuade her that her place- w as to shine in society. Miss Brown took a course in nursing at the Presbyterian Hospital. So many rich girls take up nursing as a fad and then give It it)) when the hard tusks tome, that it was- not thought that Miss Brown would continue long. Apparatus Which Will Aid in the Pro pulaion nf a Bicycle. Here Is an apparatus which the In ventor claims will greatly aid In the propulsion of a bicycle, the device applying the principle of Increased lev erage by a louger throw of the cranks during the forward and downward movement. It Is easy to understand that the longer the cranks the greater the force which can be exerted In the i propulsion of the wheel, but with the I Increase In length of the crank comes the disadvantage of compelling the feet to travel In n larger circle, which stretches and doubles up the leg of the rider beyond the point of comfort. With the new apparatus provision Is VABIABI.K-TMHOW 1IICVCI.H CRANK. made for increased leverage where it can be used lo advantage, and the throw Is reduced to a minimum while traversing that portion of the circuit where no leverage can be applied. Each crank Is mounted In a tube attached to the crank shaft and at the outer end of the cranks are pairs of wheels which travel around the rings attached to the frame, thus guiding the crauks In and out of the tubes. It will be seen by a glance at the picture that the pedals are farther from the crank shaft on the downward movement than during the upward, which is the end sought to be attained by the Inventor, who Is James Anderson Malone, of Grayson, Ky. Mow He Managed. Absent-minded persons are the easy prey of the unscrupulous. A noted German chcss-playlng professor had lost three overcoats at a cafe while eu gaged at his favorite pastime.' He was at a loss to know how to prevent a fourth from going astray, when all at once a brilliant Idea occurred to him. Immediately before sitting down to a game he took bis brand-new garment, hung It over the buck of his chair, leant against It. and said to himself with a grateful feeling of perfect security, "Now it must be safe." He soon be came deeply engrossed In his game, when a light-fingered gentleman ap proached, and apparently became greatly interested. At a critical mo ment he tapped the professor on tbo shoulder, exclaiming, "Excuse me." "Don't mention It," returned the ab sorbed piaster bending forward. Like lightning, the thief withdrew the coat from the chair, and a moment later bad disappeared Into the street. tram J. C. RIDPATH. LORD PLAYFAIR'S ASSURANCE. Induced Prince of Wales to Ladle Molten J,ead with Hia Hani. . One of the most honored and conspic uous figures In the public life of Great Britain during the last half century was Lord iPlay fair. The vast sanitary improvements, which have taken place In England within thirty years and the evolution of the whole system of scien tific and technical Instruction are due to Pluyfnlr more than to any other man, says the North-America u Review, He originally suggested the adoption of open halfpenny letters, now known as post cards, and he was largely Instru mental in suggesting the basis of nn equitable agreement betwen Great Britain mid America when President Clcvchijid's Venezuelan message had brought the two countries into danger ous 'antagonism. Among Playfalr'a students at the University of Edin burgh was the Prince of Wales, of whom a curious anecdote is told. "It was while the Prince of Wales was llvlug in Edinburgh, as Playfalr'a pupil in the application of science to industry, that an Interesting Incident occurred. The two. were standing near u caldron containing lead, which was boiling at a white heat. 'Has your royal highuess,' asked Playfair, 'any faith In science?' 'Certainly,' was the reply. Playfair then carefully washed the Prince's lmnds with ammonia to get rid of any grease that might be on them. "Will you now place your hand In this boiling metal and ladle out a portion of It?' said Playfair. .'Do you tell nie to do this?' asked the Prince. 'I do,' was the answer. The Priuce In stantly put his hand Into the caldron and ladled out some of the boiling lend without sustaining any Injury. It Is a well-known scientific fact that the hu man hand, If perfectly cleaned, may be placed uninjured In .end boiling at white heat, the moisture of the skin protecting It under these conditions from any injury. Should the lead be at a temperature perceptibly lower the effect would be, of course, very differ ent." ' Ilia Kipcrlenee.
