Jeffreys of Portland arrived last Saturday evening for a visit with her cousin, Mrs. T. P. Fish, accompanied by her daughter Blanche. The Ladies Aid society will meet next Tuesday with Mrs. Vincent at the hotel. Don't forget the date, ladies. Come and bring your thimbles. Our stock of clothing is complete in every respect. He expects to be on duty for the com pany at that point about two weeks. The newly elected county offici als were sworn in Monday, and they are now fairly started upon two years of bard work and trouble. The offices are not worth the strug Kle for them. Who said "Sour grapes?" W.'.Humphrey, an old resident of this country ami an honored knight of the stick and rule, was in town the fore part of the week with one of Edison's famous con oertographs. He gave a good en tertainment and was liberally patronized. Mrs. L. M. Starr went down to Yaquina Monday, evening to relieve Agent Gaither, who hadpl.inne.1 to be one of a party in an outing on the Siletz. The other membeis ol the proposed expedition were Harry Waldeii, traveling freight and pass enger auent of the C & lv, Fred Walch of Yaquina and Peal Guithcr of Toledo. Starr returned Tueidav, GOUNC1L PROCEEDINGS. Council Chamber, Toledo, Or., July 2, 1900. Common council met iu regular session. Roll-call showed the fol lowing members present:' Mayor H. W. Vincent, Aldermen J. Ofste dahl, K. F. Gaar, Wra. Alexander, A. T. Peterson, C. C. Kubler; ab sent, Alderman Beal Gaither. Minutes of last meeting read and approved. The mayor called up the matter of an ordinance on nuisances with in the city of Toledo, which had Lbeen laid over at .a previous meet ing, and inquired of the committee 011 ordinances as to what bad b,een done in .the premises. Said com mittee reported it had done nothing toward drafting such an ordinance. It was then moved by Councilman Peterson that said committee be given further time in which to act on and report said ordinance. Sec onded - by Councilman Alexander and unanimously carried. The ways and mean committee reported by Councilman Ofstedahl that nothing had been done by it worthy of report in regard to in- hall lot" and moved for further lime in which to make said investi gation and report. Seconded by Councilman Gaar and unanimously carried. The committees on claims, streets, ordinance, elections and fire and police' had no reports. The special committee, appointed at last meeting, to interview the business men of the city of Toledo for the purpose of devising ways and means to establish a fire depart ment, reported it had been unable to complete its labors, and Council man Peterson moved for further time. Seconded by Councilman Kubler and unanimously carried. The( following claims were al lowed under suspension of the rules, on motion of Councilman Ofstedahl, seconded by Councilman Alexander: C. H. Young, salary as city marshal for month of June, 567; same, cleaning city jail arid time, $1.75; Fred Stanton, for work on streets and straw for two bed ticks, $2-35; B. F. Swope, fees as city recorder for month of June, $4.40. Moved by Councilman Ofstedahl that the city marshal be authorized and empowered to hire two deputy marshals for the 4th day of July, 1900. Seconded by Councilman Kubler and unanimously carried. Moved by Councilman Peterson that when the council adjourns it be to meet again July 11, 1900, for the purpose of completing all unfin ished business. Seconded by Coun cilman Alexander and carried unan imously. Moved by Councilman Peterson that in the matter of the grade of 6th street the same be referred to the committee on streets, to report at next meeting.
