LOCAL IN BRIEF.
Colonel F. J. Parker has whacked
asunder the ties that bound him to
the Walla Walla Statesman and re
tired to his fine ranch near Elk
City, "to grow up with Lincoln
county," he says. The colonel
gives two substantial reasons for
deserting the field of journalism, in
which he has so long been a shining
light, viz: Delinquent subscribers
and diseased democracy. He is a
democrat or used to be but can
not line up with the party headed
by Bryan. His son fought iu the
Philippines, and he heartily en
dorses the work of "the boy." He
will now proceed to improve his
ranch, advocate Koud roads and
bridges and general advancement

ker is welcomed by a host of Lin
coin county friends.
Captain Smith, who resides near
Otter Rock, was in Toledo Wednes
day, accompanied by a pair of his
fatuous bear dogs. Mr. Smith and
his dogs have killed fifteen bears
this season, and it hasn't been a
very good season for bear. He has
kindly consented to bring his dogs
to Toledo in a few days and give
local sports an opportunity to have
a nuxup with Bruin in his native
haunts on the wooded banks of the
Olalla. The Leader man has cot
his lead-pencil whittled to a keen
point, and expects td be in the
thickest of the fray.
Lester, the little 6-year-old son
of Mr. and Mrs. William Enos, got
his right foot caught in the log
Carriage, last Saturday at the Toledo
sawmill, where Mr. Enos is em
ployed as head sawyer. The foot
was badly injured and it was nec
essary to amputate the second toe.
Drs. Thayer and Carter attended
the little sufferer and he is now
hobbling about, as cheerful as ever.
J. Blower of Mill 4 has been en
gaged this week in shearing his
sheep. His flock is strictly high
grade and always yields a heavy
clip of JSo. 1 wool, a sample of
which may be seen at this office. It
measures a foot in length and is
"a good staud," as they say in
corn countries.
Captain George Harney of Siletz
was in Toledo Tuesday and while
here his team worked him for a
nice, new harness in which to cele
brate the glorious Fourth. The
intelligent animals rati away and
tore their old clothes beyond repair.
Peter Schirmer of Pool slough
was up Tuesday with a loadof
strawberries the kind which has
made the Schirmer ranch famous,
and which "go like hot cakes" in
Toledo.
School Superintendent Bethers is
engaged these days in making
official visits to every district iu the
county. It is a big job when the
' electric cars are not running.
Miss Matilda Rache went over
to the Agency Wednesday with
Prof, and Mrs. Bert R. Betz to ac
cept the position of mess cook.
Attorney B. F. Jones returned
.yesterday evening from a business
trip to the slate capital and other

of Lincoln county's most progress

part of the week after lumber with
which to build barns and otherwise

the M. E. church will be here Fri-
lay evening, July 6, for quarterly
conference, going, to Siletz Satur
day. He will return to Toledo Sun

The Ladies Aid society met Tues
day afternoon with Mrs. G. R.
Schenck and both hands and
tongues were busily engaged during
the session. There wasanMnus
ually good attendance, and the pres
ident earnestly hopes it will in
crease until every member responds
to roll-call and participates in the
good work.
Henry Gannon brought in a sam
ple of mesquite grass a few days
ago from a point about three miles
east of Toledo. The specimen
buuch measures nine feet and is
hardly .more than an average of
what grows in that locality. Mr.
Gannon says it would be possible
to find grass there at least ten feet
in height. O. O. Krogstad placed
the sample on exhibition in The
Leader office, where it may be
seen by all who are inclined to be
s uspicions of fish stories, rutabaga
yarns, etc. There may also be seen
at Mr. Krogstad's place of business
7-foot oats, grown on the Hans
Larsen place, and in this office is a
bunch of 8-foot rye taken from the
Butler place. As we remarked be
fore ouce upon a time Lincoln
county, iOregon, beats the world

her home at Salem Wednesday
morning, after a very pleasant visit

certain party or parties contemplate
placing fish traps in Yaquina bay,
which will seriously interfere with
gill-net fishing and navigation in
said bay, and we would respectfully
ask the people of Lincoln county,
and particularly those who are in
terested in the fishiug industry of
Yaquina bay, to give this matter
their serious attention and consid
eration. Petitions will be circulated
at Elk City, Toledo, Yaquina and
Newport, protesting against placing
said fish traps in said bay.

depart tomorrow morning for
Gray's Harbor, Wash., in search of
experience and profitable employ
ment. The young men are strong,
active and willinsr. and will suc

Charles Boeckman, recently from
California, purchased last Saturday,
through Agent Allphin, Mrs. C. G.
Copeland's place, near F, J. Frary's,
Mrs. Copeland coming over from.
Siletz to make the transfer. Mr,
Boeckman is at present employed
in the valley, but will make his
home on his purchase iu the near

Prof, and Mrs. R. F. Holm re
turned yesterday evening from their
visit at Philomath. While absent
they enjoyed an outing with friends
on the Alsea river. The professor
fractured one of his knees and
amused himself in various other
ways, and the trip undoubtedly
added a great deal to his stock of
muscle and appetite.
Mrs. W. E. Dunn and son of
Spokane and Miss Emma Moore of
Portland, who had been visiting
Mesdames Tom Espy and M. S.
Rich, departed for their homes
