ATTHEE, aiaiumer. Dealers in Cedar Lumber, ward march of American civilization and prevent our nation from ful filling its glorious destiny. There j is as great a need today for patriot. I ism and loyalty to our flag as there ever was during the rebellion of the; j South. Treason today, boldly and I unblushingly stalks through the j land and denounces our govem iment. And why is the govern ment denounced? Because it up holds the honor of its flag in the Philippines, and is conducting war that was fotced upon it? Be cause it dares to take the next step which destiny has marked out for I our nation, and is going forward in the scale of progress instead of ! backward? There is no doubt but i I what the Philippine question will ! I be an important issue in the coming j ' presidential campaign. The repub-1 !lican party will nominate a staunch j i edvocate of the war and expansion I policy of the present administration j j while the opposite party will j probnhly nominate a man for presi-! i dent who is an "anti-imperialist" i I to the very core. V. J. Bryan the democrat and populist leader, is now a bosom friend of Aguinaldo and will no doubt have a great influence toward shaping the policy of his party in the interest of so called anti-imperialism. I was at one time an admirer of Mr. Biyan and voted for him at the last presi dential election, but since he has taken his "anti-imperialistic" posi tion I can no more conscientiously march under his political banner fian I could fight under the rebel flag of Aguinaldo. While I am still a populist in everything except free silver and "imperialism," yet I must confess that there is but one course open to me and that is to 1 j vote with the only loyal party to day the republican party. I also I hope that I will have an oppor tunity to vote for that hero the State of New York's nobh gover nor, Theodore Roosevelt for presi dent. I believe in political reform, i and I will ever be found in the ranks of those that are working for reform. I believe in that which is generally considered a populist ' principle direct legislation through I the initiative and referendum. I tcan not, however, see how it can be called a populist principle any more than a republican principle. Some of the leading advocates of it j are republicans, and the only state j (South Dakota) where it has ever I been made into a law. The bill " "j t'M-vu d iifuuiii.ttij legisla ture.
