It seems to me high time
every American citizen was awaken-

great deal more dangerous than
Aguinaldo himself. Aguinaldo

holds the honor of its flag in the
Philippines, and is conducting
war that was fotced upon it? Be
cause it dares to take the next step
which destiny has marked out for
I our nation, and is going forward in

I to the very core. V. J. Bryan the
democrat and populist leader, is
now a bosom friend of Aguinaldo
and will no doubt have a great
influence toward shaping the policy
of his party in the interest of so
called anti-imperialism. I was at
one time an admirer of Mr. Biyan
and voted for him at the last presi
dential election, but since he has
taken his "anti-imperialistic" posi
tion I can no more conscientiously
march under his political banner
fian I could fight under the rebel
flag of Aguinaldo. While I am
still a populist in everything except
free silver and "imperialism," yet
I must confess that there is but one
course open to me and that is to

I hope that I will have an oppor

i and I will ever be found in the
ranks of those that are working for
reform. I believe in that which is
generally considered a populist
' principle direct legislation through
I the initiative and referendum. I
tcan not, however, see how it can be
called a populist principle any
more than a republican principle.
Some of the leading advocates of it
