The Yaquina Bay Mercantile Co. are receiving lots of new' goods make proof on his homestead soon, then he will move to Clackmas for the summer. Attorneys W. Hufford, of Portland, Harry Denlinger, of In- pendence and Y. E. Yates of Cor vallis, arrived last evening to attend circuit coart. H. Denlinger, Sr. was in town yesterday, fresh from the chittim patch. He has 4,800 pounds of good clean bark which means a nice little sum of money. Conroy, Son & Co. have received i a contract for fifty tons of chittim bark. Thev are paying $2.50 to $2.75 per hundred and furnishes 1st class sacks free to patrons. Mrs. Chas. Pearse and son, of San Francisco, visited with her mother, Mrs. J. T. Vincent, of this place, this week. They will re turn home tomorrow morning. Ade Crosno came up from the beach mine at Otter Rock yester day afternoon. He has been suf fering with several nice sized boils and came np to give them a rest for a few days. A. L.. McDonald was down from C'itwood last. Tuesday acting as a witness for T. Knrtichanoz, who made final proof on his homestead Lonnie was our first new subscriber under the new management. Dr. Adams, the Albany dentist, went down to Newport last evening and will be prepared to do dental work for a few days. Dr. Adams is a fine workmen and parties need ing work done in his line will do well to call on him. Oliver and Clarence Altree came over from Drift creek Wednesday and are preparing the old Wallus ki's boiler for shipment to Portland, where they have traded it for a 20 horse power engine and boiler to be Mr. Mills and family arrived from Waldport last Wednesday evening and will make their future home in this city. Sheriff Ross has been out over the county this week serving sub poenas on jurymen. Friends of Tom Espey will be grieved to learn that he has been failing rapidly of late. Hurley Lutz and Renus Arnold wheeled to Big creek last Sunday. Why Renus went nobody knows. Mr. Rancourt, who lives three and a half miles down the river, while prospecting for coal struck what promises to be a good vein of petroleum. Dr. Darnell has secur ed a sample of the crude oil and intends sending it to the Oregon Agricultural College and having it analysed. W. L. Davis left for Eddyville yesterday morning to assist his house on his coat ranch. The farmers in this county could well afford to pay Wes at least $10 a day to come back to town and remain, as he is intending to peel chittim, which means, of course, that the price of that commodity will come down at least $20. per ton. Bark is a good price now and we want it to remain so. So send him home. Joe Turnidge, our Toledo-Siletz mail carrier, had a small run-away last Wednesday. Going down Sugar Hill a singletree broke, let ting the tongue down, and fright ning the horses. After they ran a little while Joe thought it was get ting too warm for him so he just stepped out and let them gu. They ran b'ut a short distance when one of the horses got down and stopped them. The damage done was a slightly bruised horse, a broken singletree and tongue and a smash ed wheel. Found Dead. Last Friday evening A. D. Shipley, a bachelor .living near Harlan, was found dead about one hundred yard,s south of his dwel ling. Rev. A. C. Tunison and I,. A. January found the body laying face downward buried in the grass, limbs thrown up, with arms under the body in a cramped position, but showed no signs of struggling or that death was caused by foul play. A leather strap holding his dog was in his right hand and was gripped so tight that the dog was unable to get loose. Mr. Shipley sent by L. W. Mulvaney for some groceries on Thursday morning, and seemed to be cheerful and in good health. About 3 o'clock p. m. the same day Rev. Pettit and wife and Mr. Stevenson passed by Mr. Shipley's house and he was sitting on the porch with his dog by his side. Thi1' w?.15 the lat time he wns seen alive. On Friday morning B. F. Grant went to Mr. Shipley's to haul hay and found both doors of the house open, the table set and things in their usual order, showing that he had eaten supper the previous evening. Not seeing Mr. Shipley about the premises, Mr. Grant called for him but getting no response he concluded that he had gone to, some of the neighbors'. Mr. Grant then hauled hay until noon and Mr. Shipley not appear ing, he became uneasy about him. Sending for some neighbors they searched the place and the body was found as above stated. Judge Stewart walked up from Newport last Tuesday and brought a cow that he purchased from Rev. Booth. Charley Hyde came down from the farm last Saturday to visit his parents, returning the following day. The work of painting the school house is progressing rapidly. It will very much improve the looks of the building. Judge Hamilton and family pass ed down to Newport Wednesday evening. The Judge came up to open court in this place this morning. The Ladies Aid Society of the M. E. Church will give an Ice Cream Social in' this city, on next Thursday, July 27. They will serve ice cream all afternoon and evening. Let everybody go and eat cream and help pay the church debt. Conroy, Son & Co. have leased the Copeland store building and will soon have carpenters at work repairing and thoroughly overhaul ing the same. They find their present location to small to accom modate their rapidly increasing trade. Rev. and Mrs. Tonkins, of Ma nama, are visiting Mrs. Tonkins' parents, Mr. and Mrs. Conroy. The.v both preached in the M. E. Church last Sunday, Mrs. Tonkins holding services in the morning, and Mr. Tonkins preaching in the evening. The Folk's excursion over the C. & E. to Nepwort last Sunday was a large affair. Three hundred people were on board when thev landed at Newport. The Corvallis College band accompanied the exursiou and furnished the music. The crowd seemed to enjoy the day on the beach. Dr. Tatom, Dentist. Will be in Toledo the 20th day of July and will remain one week. Those wishing work clone must call early as his time is limited. Don't forget the date.
