After lying silent in a bale of hay afneo last fall a watch belonging to TYalter Cumnilngs of Touchet was found uninjured when the bundle -was opened recently. The watch had lalleu from Mr. Ounnnings' poc let while he was operating the baler and It was supposed that the time piece had been crushed to a shape Bess mass. From curiosity a number rf bales wero opened and the watch was found. On being wound It took up its work where it had left off, having run 16 hours after having ieen pinched in the hay. Mr. Leneve. the wharf agent, In forms us that several piles have just broken loose and the wharf Is In a precarious condition. Attorney Hall and Mr. Davis, two homesteaders from Sixes river, were doing business in town last week. Mr. Hall says that the goats he is experimenting with are doing well, and that if he had a few more it wonld save him the trouble of clear ing his ranch of brush. Chas. Crewe and Jas Sutton are cutting brush under contract on the Hughes dairy farm at the mouth of Sixes, while Chas. Quigley has a similar contract at Al Marsh's on Eik river. Mr. Marsh has a good place on which he has been making many Improvements the last year or two with the view of increasing his dairy herd. There was a report current some time ago Jhat the cement work on the cold storage at this place was crumbling. Mr. Leneve, however. informs us that such is not the case, and that the entire building stands in just as good condition as when it was first completed; the angry waves that beat around its base not having disturbed it in the least. Ace Carey had busineis in town last Saturday, having evidently come on a "special" as he arrived from his Corbin farm before our sleepy townsmen had their first morning's candle lighted. He in forms us that one of his most valu able dogs, which was in the hog fight on Mussel creek mentioned in our last issue, has since died from the injuries it received. Supt. Guerin was in town on his way to Wedderburn to attend the Teachers' examination. Mr. Guerin has been suffering greatly for the pat 10 days with the affliction of his tongue which has been troubling him for several years. He was seven hours in walking from Langlois to this place and arrived here in such a condition that he was unable to speak, having to write his wants. The .walk Is one that a few years ago he could negotiate In three hours. He passed, on down the coast somewhat recuperated from his rest here. What might have been a serious accident occurred while C. Malehorn, Aliie and Court Guerin were build ing a bridge near the head waters of Floras creek. While raising a heavy cross beam under which Clint and Court were standing on the bridge frame It suddenly slipped and to save themselves from being struck jumped. Court landing In the water twenty-five feet below with Injuries about the shoulder and arm. Clint fell on some jagged rocks resulting in a badly lacerated jaw, making It necessary to obtain medical treat ment at once. John Prock had the misfortune to get seriously hurt while cutting brush on Elk river last week. In company with several others he was slashing brush on swampy land, and In felling a small tree it became lodg ed on a snag about two feet in dia meter. While trying to dislodge the smaller tree tho snag broke, strik ing Mr. Prock In the chest and pin ning him to the ground where he lay in a small ditch or creek with the log on top of him. Had the grour '. been hr.'d he would have been Instantly killed, and as it was he was quite badly Injured two ribs being broken on the left side just over tho heart. After a vacation of several months In which to recuperate his health, Rev. Geo. Roach will again hold services in the Port Orford church; preaching here Sunday, Feb. 14th, at tho usual morning and evening hours. The first crop of lambs are mak ing their nppearance on tho sheep ranges, and quite a few are succumb ing to the cold damp weather. Should the stormy period continue much longer heavy losses will be experienced by a number of stock men in cattle ns well as sheep Ton days in February, and ten wit ones!
