Councilman J. N. Nelson declares that the tremors which many here thought were due to a distant earthquake were caused entirely by the blasting of the piling at the new ferry slip. He says tnu shocks were felt at Identically tho time the three blasts wore exploded. Others declare that it was dynamite that an earthquake tremor prod uces a sensation on one who has ever experienced It that cannot be mis taken. W. S. Turpen is still positive that it was a quake. Goes to Port Orforrt. The Wll helmlna will sail tomorrow for Port Orford with freight. Port Orford merchants say that they are short of all kinds of provisions and must have goods soon. Gold Beach and Wedderburn are also short provi sions and must have goods soon. But It practically is Impossible for a vessel as large as the WUhelmlna to be certain of sufficient water on the bar to cross In and out so the Wilhelmina won't venture there. The Osprey Is still tied up at North Bend. ' AT THE THEATRE. The Tacoma Ledger has the fol lowing concerning the singer who ap pears at the Masonic Opera House, January 27, under the auspices of the Chamlnade club: "Of Mrs. May Dearborn Schwab, Portland's charming lyric soprano, many flattering reports have been re ceived, and there was much Interest felt In this, her first appearance In this city. The verdict, judged by the rapturous applause which fol lowed her numbers, was of entire ap proval. Mrs. Schwab has a voice of exquisite purity and freshness, and she uses It In the most delightful manner. Her appearanco Is espe cially pleasing, and her singing goes straight to the heart, winning her many friends, who will bo happy to welcome her again. A nretty conceit of Mrs. Schwab Is tho prac tice she makes of singlns rose songs in honor of the Rose city. Next Saturday evening, January 16, the Keafie Company will bo seen to advantages In tho latest New York success "Facing the Music." FOR CLEANER SHOWS. L. A. Mills Writes Concerning Mov ing Picture Theatres. Editor Times: There has beenconslderable. dis cussion of late concerning the mov-" ing picture shows. While I admit there are pictures sometimes shown that are hardly what we would like, It Is very hard to have everything of the best. Why all this talk on mov ing pictures alone, usually by some one "sore" or with some personal grievance? Now, we are going to wage war on the moving picture man make an "example" of him, I sup pose. To shut out crime Is all good1 and well, nothing would suit mo bet ter, but If it lg put out of our mov ing picture theatres we would also havo to stop its heing acted out in tho larger theatres. If this were not done It wpuld show unjust dis crimination and unfairness In the ex treme. Nino out of ten of our lead ing plays have crime or Infldollty of husband or wife in them. Tho pro portion is much greater than In tho moving picture drama. If the plans of the ag!tator3 are fully carried out, few theatrical companies visiting tho city but would be liable to arrest and possibly thirty days. There are various things to coi- rupt tho youth In Marshfleld. For I instance, the "Diamond Dick," "Nick Carter," and other publica- 'tions sold openly on the newstands. that tend to make a hero of a cri minal. Crime has been acted on tho Marshfleld stage for years strange that no one ever thought of its be ing detrimental to tho mind of tho youth before. I am In favor of making these things better, but let us make a clean up nil along tho line. L. A. MILLS. WILHELMINA WILL SAIL EARLY WEDNESDAY FOR PORT ORFORD. MP'JS&w CLEANLINESS. for all.
