CALL HAS BEEN Issued for a meeting of Coos Bay fruit growers to be held In the Chamber of Commerce In Marshfleld, Saturday mnrnini. .Tnnimrv 1 fi. Tlila la n matter of real Importance not on y to the fruit growers but to every one Interested In the development of the varied resources of Coos county. There has been some complaint among the apple growers that the prices realized for the products of their orchards were not sufficient to warrant any particular effort being made to Improve conditions. There Is some justice In the complaint of low prices but the fruit growers are themselves responsible. It Is only within the past year or two that any attention has been given to the proper development of orchard products either In quantity or quality. When urged or compelled by the fruit inspection law to prune, spray and otherwise to care for his orchard the fruit grower will promptly reply that at present prices on Coo? Bay It does not pay. This is no reason, however, to abandon hopa and go along in the same old rut leav ing trees uncared for and deteriorate until almost worthless. There is a remedy and one that iseasily applied. Form a strong fruit groue.-s u-nlon, develop the orchard into good condition, producing first-class, fine flavored fruit and then the union will bo able to increase the price of apples. The Hood River union has within four years raised the price of Spltzenberg apples from 85 cents per box to $3.15 and yellow New towns to $2.50. Coos Bay fruit growors may not equal this but with a union and proper care and attontlon they can advance prices until there will be a handsome profit in the business. The Gravenstein and King ap ples offer a most excellent field of effort for Coos county fruit growers to develop an apple market of their own and the results that would follow Intelligent and concerted action would prove surprising. There are some fruit growers so blind to their own interests that they look Indifferently upon the formation of a union and think It would be usoless. If these men could hav heard the comments of a recent vis itor on Coos Bay who came here to secure an orchard they might get a different view. This man who 13 an experienced fruit grower said: "What Is the use of buying fruit land here? What fruit trees you have are not cared for. No price for what apples you do raise and you have not energy enough to form a union. I can buy land as cheaply where they have live unions as I fin hero with the advantage of a good mar ket for ovorythlng I raise at good prices and a live progressive commu nity in which to live." This is the view of an exp rlenced fruit grower froni outside and should be studied by local orchard owners . A strong union will not only develop quality but will also Increase the quantity so that the Coos Bay market will attract buyers from abroad and the advance In prices will :be immediate. ThlB is an ago of centralization and organization. Strangers base their estimate of a community largely on the spirit of unity and progress that Is evident in the efforts to advanco local interests. Coos Bay has an excellent example In the benefits and advantages of organization in its cooparatlve creamery. Contrast the difference be tween tho ranchers on Coos River before the establishment of the cream ory"and what it is today. The same splendid results will follow tho or ganization of a fruit growers union. Wake up! Organize! SUPER-SENSITIVE SOULS. THERE ARE, on Coos Bay, as In other lively communities, men who aro super-sonsltivo about newspaper comment. They are always glad of the friendly paragraph or story in which they figure, how ever much they may, by way of mock-modesty, deprecate the public monUon; they are rarely averse to the pleasant note and comment In which thoy or theirs ar paraded In kindly fashion, and there have- been instances of real gratitude, felt and expressed, for tho saving grace of tho public-prints when sonio of the gravor episodes of life have confronted thorn. But, onco hale a man within the range of newspaper criticism, direct, or Implied, and ho grows vonomous with hate and incoherent with rago at tho liberty taken with h is name or relation to the matter under review. It is ono of tho farces of life, and the newspaperman has a grim ap preciation of It that verges near the mark of contompt when ho scans hla general treatment of men anil finds thorn so helplessly and hopelessly childish. For bo It known, that In all tho relations a paper assumes with Its reading patronage, the porsonal equation Is tho ono most relig iously obsorved at all times; mistakes will ofton occur; but In tho main thoy aro caught on tho long lino of careful scrutiny that pervades a newspaper office and boforo thoy ar o uttered In cold black and white. There Is justification of sonio kind b ohlnd overy personal mention and al lusion In a responsible nowspapor. This must bo remembered at all tlmos, In justlco to tho public, tho p erson, and tho paper. Thoro la ono way of suppressing t ho super-sensitive soul who cannot stand tho counter-point of journal! stic animadversion, and that is to liar all mention of him under any a nil all circumstances; this is a cruelty coltlom resorted to, but always avail ablo; and ofton as editors and re porters aro tempted to uso It, they, as ofton, refuse to probe, Or Hatter, tho vanity, that has brought tho I ml Ividual undor such contemplation.
