COOS COUNTY DAIRIES. RS. S. A. YOAKAM, the Coos county lady inspector of dai rles, has raised a tempest about her ears by a speech made at the state dairy convention recently hold in Salem, in which she made some muck raking statements In re ference to Coos county dairies. We have not seen a verbatim report of Mrs. Yoakam's remarks, but tho pub lished reports were such as to war- rant the conclusion that they were , - rather broad In their allegations of remisness on tho part of many Coos ,. x county dairies. It is understood that Mrs. .Yoakam is desirous of obtain , lng" a state law that will be more strict in its regulation of dairies and in her zeal and onthuslasm sought to make Coos county a "hor rible example." This is regrettable from any point of view for the dairy industry Is ono of the important aud growing rosources of Coos county nnd should be nurtured and protect ed rather than assailed. If there are violators of the present laws and uncleanly dairies let them bo pro ceeded against and punished accord- lng to law; let it bo done properly. Let us wash our linen or rather our dairies at home. In another column Tho Times prints a commu nication which presents some inter esting facts In reference to this mat ter and tho Coquille Herald also con tributes tho following to the discus sion: "Coos county has a lady inspector of dairies. She is unquestionably versed in tho butter-making business as are few of her sox, and this fact, coupled with her energy and evi dent desire to develop tho Industry in both county and sUto, has earned for nor recognition in tho councils of the State Dairy Assembly. So much to tho lady s credit, and of that much overyono, paiticulaily in Coos county, is wanantably proud. "Rut there Is ono lamentable fault possessed by Mrs. Yoakam. Sho talks too much with respoct to her position hua too much imagination, which she indulges very likely with out weighing its injuilous effects whilo it coutiibutes happily to hor cravo for personal ngcrnndlzemont. The idea is too ab- surd for tho sane person to harbor for a moment. "When Mrs. Yoakam tells these things, groundless as they are, to a great state gathering she falls to re- alize the injustice, the irreparablo injury she is inflicting upon tho very Industry of her county that she is ' expected to defend and assist. As' a matter of fact, leading dairymen say and know that we have Just as cleanly conditions in tho dairies and creameries of Coos county as they have anywhere; they know it be cause they have visited these dairies and creameries quite as often as has Mrs. Yoakam perhaps oftener, and are familiar with the true state of affairs thoreln existing. Had any such conditions been found as set forth by the inspector In her talk, theso same men would nave exposed and prosecuted the cases In the In tel ests of decency and the profes sion. "Tho Herald in conclusion would 3ay that If the newspapers have not misquoted Mrs. Yoakam respecting her utterances at the Salem Conven tion she should be asked to correct the damaging misstatements; If mis quoted sho bhould publish the fact to preserve tho good name of ono of Coos county's growing and import ant industries."
