V. j Crittenden, of Portland, has bonded 2 000 acres near Denmark, Curry Co., and will plant it to orchard: Mr. Crittenden thinks Curry Is one of the best fruit sections In the state and proposes to go into the business ex tensively. Myrtle Point Enterprise. New House Committee. The di rectors of the North Bend Commer cial Club held a meeting and ap pointed a new house committee com posed of Peter Loggle, James Allen and Dr. Burmester. The new com mittee ordered the partition between the card and billiard room removed making a larger billiard room. Sev eral new members have recently joined the. club. There are about forty-five members In North Bend and twenty in Marshfield. Will Install. A. An derson. Big Duck Feast. The Marshfield Arle of Eagles is preparing for its annual "duck fea3t" which will bo held early next month. In order to Insure getting enough game, the Arle purchased 1000 shells for dis tribution among the members. Some Intimated this would be a violation of the state game law and called the attention of State Game Warden Cal Wright to It. Upon investigation, It was found that unless the birds aro slaughtered for profit, there is no violation of the law. AVomnn Mine Operator. Mrs: Marvin, of New York, who Is visiting here at the home of Sheriff Fent'on, is one of the eight women mining' operators in tho world. She holds the secret of the' process of extract ing gold bearing platinum from' black sand, and she Is heavily Interested In properties of that character near Port Orford, Curry county. Sho leaves for Port Orford to complete arrangements for operating her claims. The necessary machinery is now in Portland and will be shipped and installed ready for operation within the next 60 days. Concerning "My Friend From In dia" which will be presented at tho Masonic Opera House next Tuesday evening, Mayor L. J. Simpson, of North Bend, who saw the play thore last week says: "The whole town Is laughing yet over that most delight ful comedy 'My Friend from India.' It is really fine. Tho best amateur performance ever presented on the Bay and tho whole company deserves great credit for their work. They have the professionals' on the run. Every one in the audience was satis fied and those who didn't go are the only sorry ones. You can't afford to miss It. It's too good. (By Associated Press.) OAKLAND, Cal., Dec. 26. Ono man waB instantly killed and four persons, including two young women, were severely injured in an automo bile wreck in the foothills near here. The steamer Breakwater arrived In Marshfield Christmas Day. As sho came up tho bay the whistles wero blown particularly long and loudly as a Christmas greeting to the city. The passengers were landed In time to enjoy the day here. The boat loft on the return trip to Portland at noon today. About the usual amount of freight business was transacted. Peculiar Accident Affects Tele phone Lines to Coos River and Eastside. Telephone lines to Coos River, Eastside, Bay City and Sumner aro out of order on account of a most unusual accident. The cable crossing tho bay was broken by tho anchor of the Grace Dollar, a steam schoon er a few days ago. Tho steamer stopped In the bay to turn around and dropped her anchor. It happen ed that the anchor fell exactly where the cable lay and In pulling up tho anchor the cable was snapped in two. If an effort wns made to doithat very thing It would be next tq Impossible and the nccident Is one which would not likely happen once in a hundred years as tho steamers seldom ever drop anchor at that part of the bay. The accident however s trouble some for the telephone . company. The wlro chief says that It will bo necessary to take the cable up entirely and repair it and put it down agalm The lines affected will prob ably be In operation again by Tues day or Wednesday. BUYS BANDON EXCHANGE. Coos Bay Homo Compnuy, Jlns All Lines In Coos and Curry Counties. The Coos Bay Home Telephone Company has purchased the Bandon Telephone Company's exchange at Bandon and a few lines running out of tho City by tho Sea, giving tho former exclusive charge of.. the lines. In Coos and Curry counties. Tho' deal wa3 effected1 this week and C. E. Hollopeter will give possession for' tho management of his new ex change. Mr. Durrett says that as soon aa tho reconstruction of the exchange and lines In Marshfield and North Bend is completed, the rebuilding of the Bandon exchange will begin. The exchange now has about seventy-five, subscribers but ho figures that It will have about two hundred as soon as' the plant is rebuilt and better service Is given. , i ORATORICAL CONTEST. t Arrangement Mndo For Event at North Bend December 30.
