It was then moved that the cau cus should vote by ballot to deter mine which two of the three nominees should be placed on the ticket. Chairman Smith thought that each person should vote for two candidates and It was decided that this should be done. Tom Hall, Charles McKnight and John D. The laying of the cornerstone of the Swedish Lutheran church at North Bend was one of the most successful events of the kind that has recently taken place on Coos Bay and the assemblage was one of tiio largest. Despite the threaten ing weather during the day, no lain fell during the program to mar the exercises or discommode the audi ence. The Rev. B. P. Bengtson of Mnrshfield, had charge of the exer cises and laid the cornerstone. The John D. W. Butler 1SS cornerstone laying address was deliv ered In Swedish. Ilev. Bengtson paid tribute to the spirit displayed by the members of the denomination on Coos Bay in making such an edi fice possible and also how greatly gratified he was over the marked progress. Captain Simpson Talks. Captain A. M. Simpson spoke briefly. He said that while he was not closely Identified with any church, he was always glad to see the ovidence of the growth of Christianity. He said that he had always tried to aid wherever possible in the building of churches and spe cified a few of the many contribu tions he has made. He paid special tribute to the Lutheran faith. In closing, he said that he would per sonally contribute $25 towards the church fund. The site for the church was con tributed by L. J. Simpson, son of Captain A. II. Simpson. The Rev. J. B. Burkhart and the Rev. Rasmussen were the other speakers of the afternoon, both de voting their addresses largely to a tribute to the benefit of Christianity and the beneficial effect of churches updn tho welfare of the community. It Had been planned to have spe cial musical services but this feature of the program was left out. J. W. Snover G7 J. M. Upton 14 For Three-Year Terms. The councilman to be elected De cember 1, are to hold office for three years. The retiring members are Claude Nasburg and J. H. Flanagan. The nomination of D. L. Rood was j not expected yesterday as it was generally understood that Mr. Mer chant had been selected as Al. Owens' running mate. However, Mr. Merchant refused to be a can didate under any circumstances. A friend of Recorder J. M. Upton today said: "It is only fair to Mr. Upton tp say that his name was used onl on the assumption that the three names presented for recorder should be placed on the official ballot." SOCIALISTS NA3IE TICKET. Will lime Candidates In Field For City Klection December 1. The Mnrshfield Socialists at a meeting at their hall last evening nominated the following ticket for the coming city election: For Recorder S. P. Keith. For councilmen W. R. Gilmoro and Frank Leslie. Owing to the provisions of the charter. It will be impossible for the Socialists to have their tipket print ed on the regular ballot, the charter providing that no names shall be placed on the ticket except those of the nominees at the regular muni cipal caucus. In consequence of this, it will be necessary for those desiring to vote for the Socialist candidates to write in the names on the ballot at tho election. SMOKED A PIPE 70 YEARS. At the meeting of the electors of Road District, No. 10, at the Ross Inlet school house, it was decided that instead of making improve ments in the highway between Sum ner and Marshfleld now, that the people should wait a short time and in addition to having a "better thor oughfare constructed more cheaply to secure the dredging of Catching Inlet at the same time. This decision was reached after considerable debate. F. E. Wilson pointed out that the proposed ex penditure of $250 per mile for which it was planned to tax the district would not accomplish much and could not possibly reduce the high way to a maximum grade of sixteen per cent unless it was made more winding than a mountain brook. Mr. Wilson suggested that Catching In let be dredged, making a fine chan nel and the dredglngs be thrown up on wliat would be the west side at the mouth and thus make a dike and a roadway. The plan met with instant apprp- val. While the audience came to the meeting intent on voting a levy sufilclent to build the present high way, it was decided by a vote of seventeen to five to adopt the plan of Catching Inlet dredglngs. ..t..r..r..-i....,...., ...4..4. ..j-. f..j. vH"r"rr "f tllMffcTEfTM D i LsM WfijiiiU The manufacturer of one of the best brands of Linoleum made nn error in the shipment of our order and as n result o are over stocked.
