The United States Postofllco Department will let the contract December 1, for carry ing the mail between North Bend and Lakeside, the Ten Mile post ofllce, December 1, for a period of one year. The contract calls for a three-time-a-week service. Steamship Brings Large Num ber of Passengers and Big Freight Cargo. The Alliance arrived In last even ing from Portland with a large number of passengers and a big freight cargo. A terrific gale was blowing when she arrived outside of the bar about 10 o'clock yesterday and Captain Olson decided not to at tempt to cross In until the tide changed. She crossed In about 2 o'clock In the afternoon, Captain Olson finding about .25 feet of water. Tho Alliance brought in a largo amount of material, piping, Interior fitting, etc., for tho new Chandler hotel. She will sail about 1:30 this afternoon for Portland. Lund, a well-known resident of Marshfield, died at Mercy hospital in North Bend this morn ing nfter a long illness. He had been a resident of Marshfield for many years. For several years, poor health has prevented him being active in busi ness. He is survived by a wife and several children. Mr. Lund's quiet, unassuming way won him tho friendship of practical ly everyone with whom ho came In contact and many are the expression of regret over his demise. Miss Renn Hampton of Coqullle Val ley Succumbs. B. E. Hampton of Myrtle Point, arrived in the city yesterday by the steamer Alliance. Ho was sum moned to Tacoma about two weeks ago by tho Illness of his daughter, Rena, who died In that city last Thursday after an illness lasting soveral weeks. Tho deceased was first taken with brain fever which later developed Into spinal menin gitis. Miss Hampton was about 22 years of ago and loft Myrtle Point last March for Tacoma.
