Members of the crew of the Osprey the election appears to have cleared the commercial atmosphere and business In all lines, they tell me, is picking up in wonderful way. A duplication of the prosperity of a year or so ago is apparently expected by all and everybody appears to be striving to do their share In bring it back. "I noticed that near Drain, the Southern Pacific has a force of men changing the public highway so that it will not encroach on the right of way selected by the company for the T)raln-Coos Bay line. When the right of way for the Drain-Coos Bay line was obtained, the company used part of the public highway at sever al points and the understanding was that the railroad would construct a new highway at these places. It is now doing this, showing that it is evidently determined to retain the right of way for the proposed line. "At Spokane, report Is current In railroad circles that the Northwest ern, a Vanderbllt line, Is about to take over the Northern Pacific. It was reported a while back that Har rlman had obtained control of the Northwestern but this proved un founded. Considerable credence is given to the latest report about the Northwestern and Northern Pacific as the two lines would work well to gether. However, It would mean that the Northwestern would use the northern route to get to the coast." northern route to get to the coast which arrived today from Wedder burn say Mr. Hume Is quite ill, being In a stupor part of the time. He has been troubled for years with kidney disease. The Osprey hade a quick trip down and back, having left here Monday. Simpson Lumber Company's Schoon er Is IJoliifi Ilurnud Near Mouth of Ten Mile Creek. The Novelty, the lumber schooner of the Simpson Lumber Company, which was driven ashore and wreck ed near the mouth of Ten Mile Creek about a year ago, is being burned. The wrecked vessel has been lying on the sand and whether someone set fire to the hull to obtain the bolts and Iron work, etc., or whether It was started by tramps Is not known. Most of the removable parts were taken from the hull soon after the wreck. CAPT. EDWARD'S VIEW. OHEGONIAN IS STUXG. RIG CATCHES MADE. Fine Run of Salmon On tho Coqullle the Last Few Weeks. COQUILLE, Ore., Nov. 12. The sllversldo season for 1908, which closes November 20, was a success ful one and the fishermen and can neries are rejoicing over the large catch. The season opened with only a small run, and it was feared that tho pack would be smaller than last season, though for the past six "weeks tho river has been teeming with fish and the canneries were swamped for a time, but they put a limit of fifty fish a day to each boat which has made It possible for them to can all of the. fish which have been dollvered. The late rains caused a small freshot In tho upper river and tho waters have remained muddy ever since, so that tho fishermen havo been fishing dnytimo and only a llt tlo night fishing has been done for tho past few weeks. It has been many years since there has been as largo a run of sll versldes In tho Coqulllo and an old timo flshorman says that it leminded him of tho early days when the ri ver was teeming with flhh and that In nil probabilities there will bo a small catch for tho noxt two years. Judge Lou ell Speaks Plainly Regard ing Statement No. 1. PENDLETON', Ore., Nov. 12. Al though the United States senate is one ambition In life for Judge Ste phen A. Lowell, of this city, Judge Lowell declines to be elected through broken pledges or disregarded laws In the following stirring letter to the Oregonlan of Portland: "Pendleton, Or., Nov. 6, 1908. "To the Editor: I notice In your Issue of this morning is an article discussing the senatorship, mention of my name as among several repub licans who may possibly receive con sideration at the coming session of the legislature. I do not know that the matter requires any attention, but I desire to go on record while the fight Is young and to say that while it is the ambition of my life to represent Oregon In the federal senate, I do not care to reach that high station over a pathway of brok en pledges or disregarded laws and I want neither silence nor word nor act of mine to lnflue'nce any member of the legislative assembly to violate his conscience or his word. "I opposed Statement No. 1 in the primary campaign with such vigor and Intelligence as I could command, believing It unwise, impolitic and for eign to the form of government un der which we live, but it is now the law of the state, made such by the majority vote of the people, and every law should be obeyed. "I speak only for myself, and do not assume to be the conscience of the party or the mentor of the leg islature. Respectfully, "S. A. LOWELL." Coos Rher Mnn Reviews the Tele phone Situation. To the Editor: I note In your Issue of today the accident to one of the bear hounds belonging to E. H. Harrlman, though perhaps there is nothing strange about this, your comment that "a telephone message notified Col. Grimes of the bear hounds Injuries," etc., is certainly mystifying as I was unaware that the wireless telephone had as yet reached that degree of perfection and as we, along the river, have labored in vain for years past to get telephonic connection with Marshfleld through the former com pany but have met with no result other than that "they would take the matter up" which they are doubtless still doing. The present company have made us similar promises but as yet we have had no evidence of much progression along this line until your comment informed us that the line is In and working. Good! any similar news will be thankfully received by all residents along the river. Yours for further progress, C. E. EDWARDS. PflWjBa'J It's a Perfect Delight To shop with us.
