WASHINGTON, Oct. 29. Five hundred manufacturers of explo sives, pulp wood and similar prod ucts, have been asked by the Na tional Conservation Commission for information as to all possible uses of sawdust. From this it will be seen the commission is going into ft no de tails in Its inventory of the natural resources of tho country. Seven thousand lumbermon have been ask ed for their opinion as to the waste of lumber In saw mills, and more than two thousand lumber dealers -and cooperage, veneer, furniture, box, vehicle and implement manu facturers have been asked to point out striking features of waste In thejr respective lines. Yet all this is only one part of tho general scheme of hunting down waste which tho com mission is following in making its Inventory. It Is going after tho llt tlo wastes here and there, which, ad ded together, and put Into dollars .and cents, make an astonishing total. For Instance, take tho making of veneer. At ltrst uiusn it may not Bcem worthy of consideration with tho manufacture of othor products mentioned. Yet, tho scarcity of tho more attractive finishing woods in tho last fow years has led to the annual production of over 1,100,000, 000 squnro feet of voneor. This, of course, has been made posslblo only by tho Introduction of now veneer-making-machinery. Tho use of veneer Is gonorally re garded as exemplifying the scarcltv of tho liner woods and typifying tho complete utilization of various kinds of woods, yet, from ono of tho sched ules of tho National Conservation Commission, it is evident that tho commission expects to discovor great wnsto oven in voneor manufacture. Though tho word voneor carries many meanings, from a glnzo applied to pottory to tho "polish" of a man , of tho world, It is most commonly j employed ns tho namo for tho thin I sllcos of wood now oxtonsively mod In tho mnnufucturo of nil sorts of articles of use, such ns wood plates, j baskets, and tho oxtorlor finish of furniture and wood work. The ma nufacture of voneer In tho last t"v yours has ndvancod by Jonps nnd bounds. Tho host veneer is sawed, 'j.i a CITY COUNCIL FAILS TO SECURE QUORUM Not Enough of the Member Present nt One Time Last Evening nnd AVill Try Again Tonight. Not enough of the city council could be gathered at the city hall at one time last night to make a quo rum so that any business could be transacted. About 8 o'clock, Council men Savage, Nelson, Sacchi and Nasburg appeared. However, Mayor Straw was absent and if Mr. Savage took the chair as president of the council, there would not be a quo rum. They waited for awhile as did the crowd. Then Councilman Sacchi had to leave for a few min utes. The other councilmen thought he went home and the meeting startl ed to break up. As they were going up the street, they met Sacchi com ing back and Mayor Straw was com ing. Meanwhile Councilman Savage had gone home and retired and re fused to come back. The meeting was called to order and adjournment taken until tonight when the Alice and First street assessments will be equalized. Several other matters will prob ably come up tonight. One of the matters that will probably be acted on tonight will be to determine whether or not to purchase type writer for tho city recorder's office. Recorder Upton has a second-hand machine that he will sell the city for $50 and P. A. Devers has another one that he offers for a similar amount. By tile last naired process logs of the desired wool are steamed until they are soft and then fixed in a lathe-like "machine, m which they are turned against a wood knife. As the log rotates against the knife, veneer of the de sired thickness is peeled off in a con tinuous slice, as If you should pare an apple, going deeper and deeper at each complete turn, until nothing Is left but the core. The center of the log left after tho veneer is cut is also called a "core." The woods principally used for making veneer aro red gum, maple, and yellow poplar, which together yield more .than half of the total product. Red gum Is largely used for baskets and maple for furniture. More valuable than these, however, aro white oak and walnut veneer. Beech, which can bo cut very thin, Is used very largely for wooden plates. A number of other kinds of woods are used. A good deal of waste occurs in the manufacture of veneer, It is always it JIIUU1U1II, lUf lllSliUlUU, Willi L UbU IU make of tho cores left by tho rotary process. In many cases these are used for pulp wood, pillars, or panel 'headings, nnd thoy aro largely used also for fuel, excelsior, crates, boxes and baskets. In tho schedule of inquiries which the National Conservation Commis sion, through the forest service, i3 , Bonding out, several questions are aimed to secure Information as to the amount of waste In veneer manu I fncturo and tho possibilities of flnd I lng ways to utilizo it.
