The past year and a half has wit nessed a complete revolution in the appearance of the city and spirit of Its people. Marshfleld today Is so entirely unlike that of the earlier slate that people who have not seen It frequently are much surprised. It lias now much the appearance of a .city. Its streets are, many of them, graded and paved. Its old buildings 2iave been renovated and painted. Jts corners have been improved by the construction of elegant brick or 'cement buildings. It has a hotel under construction which will be the tallest, best equipped and finest as ifar west in tho United States. It has imany miles of new elevated road- -ways and hundreds of new resi dences. The largest and best equip ped saw mill on the Pacific coast has been built and is in operation. Sev eral large carriers of freight have T)een added to the merchant marine of the port. A dredge costing one $rrmdred thousand dollars has been constructed for the port and will be In operation shortly. Many small .private factories of one kind or an--other have been started and metro politan stores have been established. iNor is this all, in the same time that the city has shown this marked improvement other great accom plishments have been scored. The Tbay, tho district, the county and the coast as well as the interior attrac tions, Iiave become famous. They ihavo been advertised rationally. The .-.attention of capital has been chal lenged to some purpose. A fruit ex hibition a year ago In Marshfleld stirred .the horticultural world of 'Coos county to great efforts and jproved that for certain kinds of 'iruit, notably apples and strawber- Tles, the Coos Bay country and the (Coqullle basin, wore without a su j3M3rIor on earth. An inspector was '-detained for this district under the 3aw. Fruit growers associations were formed. The orchards which had Jjeun neglected were pruned and finado productive. New orchards f-lnradreds of acres wore set out. The gravensteln applo of Coos Bay f. .and county became famous. A 'iflalry Inspector was appointed. The vdrtby conditions were improved and . the prospects of development in that direction enlarged. Out of the fruit tfhlblt of last year the first great ffulr under the auspices of the South- - era Oregon Pair Association, has irown. Thousands of people visited tJln (city during fall week, thronged Hb -paved streets, spent money, noted jihe improvement and went home to "8lp the praises of Marshfleld. The i -people of the city are to bo congra 1 tnlated. lHas jthe itlmo now arrived to stop t this' development? Shall wo quit 3rnproving? Shall wo disband the V-tfonces which have, through coopera tion, taccompllshed theso wonders, or Stain wo continue tho great work, .Jiulld asrity of .no moan Importance, davelop. ilic-country to Its fullest and make vtzs&a. port which shall be ono t of 'tbjr five greatest on this coast? J?low was this great change accom plished?. The plain answer Is througli the cooperation of capital and iho pride of Marshfleld people In jthejr own city. An Important factor in this co-operative work has beon tho Marsh iSeld Chamber of Commerce. It has he3ned to concontrato tho energy of tiho Tcoplo and direct them In tho channels of roal achievement. Tho iCbnzn&er has had a hand In ovory umprovemont which has beon ac complished. But there Is greator work to bo done in tho coming year than was done last year. Tho dredge Is coming. Somobody must arrango tor salo of tho dirt removed from tho liarbor so as to get tho funds to keop It bore. Tho apinoprlatlons expected (this fall by congress must not lonvo Coos Bay out of tho list. Thoro are railroads to bo encouraged and fos tered and tho Times Is not dreaming ikCnot that thou iimooth the ap pointed path: ' I ask not any joys the years afford, I ask not even thy averted wrath. LET me but learn to smile Let me face lightly any blow that falls; Hear bravely with my bondage all the while And hug my freedom within prison walls. THUS when the end draws near With lifted head let me the potion quaff, r S ' And so as ono who nevcr'lcarned to fear Pass on to meet thy Judgment with laugh. ' ' ' ' El'jn Glasgow. J And, then, lots of people get down right mad If you don't talk about them. The way some women talk is enough to make a married man feel bald headed. v There are pcoplo who nre'ensy to catch, but they make up for it by be ing hard to lose. THE .ENGLISHMAN'S SOLILOQUY. The world is such a bubble, don't you know Full of trial and of trouble, don't you know, You come into the world and cry, You grow older, and you sigh, Older still and 'then you die,' don't you 'know. And it's all a horrid mix, don't you know, Business, love and politics, don't you know; Fashions, follies, 'cliques' and sets, Clubs, parties, sighs and frets, Struggles, sighs and cigarettes, don't you know. Business, ah! that's trade, don't you ' know. Something lost or something made, don't you know; You trouble and you mope And hang your highest hope On perhaps the price of soap, don't you know. Love, ah! yes, you meet a girl, don't you knoy, And get In such a whirl, don't you know, Get down upon the floor And adore and implore And it's all a horrid bore, don't you know. Politics, oh! that's a lark, don't you know, Just a nightmare in the dark, don't you know; You perspire all day and night And after all the fight Then perhaps the wrong man's right, don't you know. Fashion, Ah! that's dress, don't you know, And the cause of much distress, don't you know, To determine what to wear When to go and whero And how to part your hair, don't you know. And there's really nothing In it, don't you know, For you live but just a minute, don't you know, And when you've eaten, read and felt, Heard and seen and said and smelt Why all tho cards are dealt, don't you know. You've one soul and that's all, don't' you know, One stomach and that's small, d'oVt you know, You can only wear one tie, And ono oyeglass in your eye And one coflln when you die, don't you know. Don't kick unless you know how to kick and where. People are called fickle who are real ly very sincere; but, then, they get very sincere so often over so many different things. It is hard to show also unnecessary. a fool anything The man who would rather be presi dent than be right Btands tho better chance. Self praise comes easy, but, like many easy things, Is quite valueless. It is easy enough to be honest, but you need to keep in constant practice It is a toss-up between tho man who thinks ho can sing and the man who sings he can think. The freckled girl reflects that other women may think they have beauty troubles, -but, A Salaried Bluff. Oh, what a large, (Imposing cinch To be the weather man. Who tries to lay tho future bare And does the best ho cant And, though he makes a few mistakes Most every day or two. His Job Is not In Jeopardy If guesses don't come true. He peeltf'hls ancient weather eye, And with a careful glance -At signs and tokens in the sky lie writes and takes a chance. Some days are wet and some are dry They are not all one style, And bo he can but get it right Most every little while. It does not hurt his feelings, though The weather may be dry. When he has promised that a flood Shall drop down from the sky Or. though around the 2ero mark The temperature may play, When ho has promised we shall have The very warmest day. For all he has to do Is make A venture and look wise. ' No matter If he draws a blank Or carries oft a prize. His salary goes on the same As though he were hot stuff, Ills capital and stock in trade A fine, Impressive bluff. :: :': a it n :: i 8 T ? 8 T I I 8 I 8 8 8 8 8 8 t 8 8 8 I ? 8 f 8 I 8 I THAT, at c Present time lumber is at least 50 per cent cheaper than it was a year ago? WtfWWWWWWWWWSMSMSA'WtAVWWW when it declares that one railroad, not Ilarrlman's, is so near to mate rialization, that tho Chamber will shortly be called on to help in a purely rational way. The people of Marshfleld cannot stop now. The fu ture never looked better or required more constant attention. To close, tho Chambor would bo a disaster. To continue its good work is a ne cessity and without detracting from tho great work which each citizen has done Secretary Lyons Is entitled to tho full credit of having closed an unusually brilliant year, in this most important and indispensible department.
