JIAltHIMAN'S NEW KILE. Mr. Harrlman says he will build mew lines when profits warrant. This sounds very good, indeed, but It the rule had been applied in Ore Bon In the past, or even now there would be little cause for complaint at this end of the line, and the state would now be able to boast of feed ers Into every section where they could legitimately be called for, in stead of in one-fifth of the state, as is now unfortunately the case. It is on precisely this score that 3Ir. Harrii"ni has been criticised in this state, and very justly so, even ' from the foundation which Mr. Har rlman himself now lavs down. Ke found here and hereabouts his pro fits, and taking them from here, he has spent them very largely in build ing up rival sections and communi ties. This has been his policy, reg ularly pursued and careiuny map ped out. Millions earned by his roads in this section he has diverted ts the Union Pacific main line and tra other lines; worst of all he used jirofits wrung from the people of this state and region to buy control of other Toads with which we had no connection, direct or indirect, and wolely for his own aggrandizement. Jt is not surprising that the people "who here suffered from lack of rall-B-oads, whose progress they felt to fee retarded, and who saw their neighbors advancing through the ex penditure of money earned here, should have entered protest and felt siriltlndly toward Mr. Harriman and the methods which, while they have mado him great and opulent, were demoralizing large interests along the line of these roads which he controlled in this section of the coun try. Tho people of Oregon would bo glad to tnke Mr. Harriman at his word; they would have been glad to Iiavo taken him at his word yeara ago. There Is much for the Harri- aman lines to do In the way of exten sions in this great state, and much that they could have done from past 7rofU8. There will still be much for rtJiem to do In this state and still jgreat profits with which to do it In rtho future. If Mr. Harriman sticks Hto tho rule which he has just laid down, tho people of Oregon will have -reason to bo better satisfied with yhlm than they ever have been in all 'the years they have contributed to "his lamo and wealth. rPortlnnd "Telegram. - AT THE THEATRE.
