Presi dent Roosovolt today has been admir ing a now addition to the Sagamore Hill poultry yard. It Is a handsorao big cockerel, which arrived by ox press last night and was taken from Its crate In the president's barnyard. The bird, which Is of largo slzo, came from George W. Tracey of Hattboro, Pa., where It had boon on exhibition at the county fair. By vote It was awarded to tho most popular man In the United States, and this man was Theodoro Roosevelt. It Is a proud rooster and rules tho president's barnyard without dispute by tho older Inhabitants. Mrs. Douglas Gilbert, aged seventy-throe, of Pana, 111., the oldest person to par ticipate In the annual world's spell ing match in connection with tho Wi nona Lake Assembly programme, won first honors and was awarded a prize of $20. Without hesitation she spelled "concatenation," on which A. B. Cur ry of Memphis, Tenn., and Helen Ser tobb of Muncle, Ind., who carried off the second and third honors, went down. Entering, Callagan saw his friend was still In bed. "I told you so," said Harner as he viewed the newcomer. Then he turn ed on his back and closed his eyes. Ernest Rufll nl, a delegate to tho recent conven tion of the Kappa SIgna fraternity In Denver, returned from tho Yellow stone Park and told this story: Mrs. Nicholas Longworth, daugh ter of the President, and party reach ed a crowded hotel in the Yellow stone Park last month and found tho servants on a strike. Mrs. Long worth said. "Servants all on strike? Oh, that's all right. Just tell the girls I'll give them $5 a day each If they'll work while we are here. Ask thorn If they won't do It as a personal favor to mo." The servants resumed work and all went well while tho Longworth party stayed at tho hotel. Congress man Longworth footed the bills. When Mr. Schaefer appoared at the Patrol House this morning to learn if any of the chic kens stolen from him had been re covered, seven fat Plymouth rocks stepped out from among the twenty seven collected by Corp. Roberts, and ran to greet their owner. The hens had always been undemonstrative heretofore, and Corp. Roberts was amazed to see one perch Itself upon Mr. Schaefer's shoulder, while an other pecked at his shoe and a third tried to climb up his leg.
