Hill poultry yard. It Is a handsorao
big cockerel, which arrived by ox
press last night and was taken from
Its crate In the president's barnyard.
The bird, which Is of largo slzo, came
from George W. Tracey of Hattboro,
Pa., where It had boon on exhibition
at the county fair. By vote It was
awarded to tho most popular man In
the United States, and this man was
Theodoro Roosevelt. It Is a proud

barnyard without dispute by tho

Harner, seventy years old, to his
companions when he returned from
a fishing trip Saturday night. "I
hate to quit but it looks as If my time
was up. If you boys will come up
to the cabin you may carry away all
my tackle."
"Cheer up, Jerry," said Denny Cal
lagan, who Is over sixty himself,
"you're going to live to be a hun
dred. Go homo and have a good
sleep. I'll see you In tho morning."
Shortly before 7 a. m. Sunday Cal
lagnn went to tho small one-story
building at tho foot of Bay Forty
fourth street, Ulmer Park, where
Herner lived. The door was partly
open. Entering, Callagan saw his
friend was still In bed.
"I told you so," said Harner as he
viewed the newcomer. Then he turn

"Servants all on strike? Oh, that's
all right. Just tell the girls I'll give
them $5 a day each If they'll work
while we are here. Ask thorn If they
won't do It as a personal favor to
mo."
The servants resumed work and
all went well while tho Longworth
party stayed at tho hotel. Congress
man Longworth footed the bills.

ward Schaefer of St. Matthews, not
only knows his chickens, but his chic
kens know him. When Mr. Schaefer
appoared at the Patrol House this
morning to learn if any of the chic
kens stolen from him had been re
covered, seven fat Plymouth rocks
stepped out from among the twenty
seven collected by Corp. Roberts, and
ran to greet their owner. The hens
had always been undemonstrative
heretofore, and Corp. Roberts was
amazed to see one perch Itself upon
Mr. Schaefer's shoulder, while an
other pecked at his shoe and a third
tried to climb up his leg.

The baggage crew paid they did.
As the train approached her station
the young lady, hailing the conductor,
asked, "Is ray dog nil right?"
"I don't know, mjss," replied tho con
ductor. "Don't know?" she replied. "Why
don't you know? It's your business to
know. You haven't touched him or un
tied him?"
"No; we didn't touch or untlo him,
and that's Just It You tied him to a
trunk checked for two stations back.
The trunk had to be put off, and so we
