ROSEBURG, Ore., Aug. 13. The forest flro which was burning about twolve miles from West Fork about two weeks ago, and a littlo later was reported under control, is again rag ing. About a dozen men were fight ing, it Monday and eight more went out from hero later. A largo body of valuable timber Is endangered. THREE ARE DROWNED. Father, Son niul Daughter Lose Lives Together. HUNTINGTON, Ore., Aug. 13. While bathing in Snake River, 14 miles from hero, Georgo Evans and his oldest son and daughter were drowned. Mr. Evans had come out of tho water and was almost dressed when his son, who was still in the wnter with the daughter, teaching her to swim, called for help. Mr. Evans rushed In to tho rescue, and all threo were drowned. Mrs. Evans stood on tho bank and witnessed the drowning, being unable to help them. FIRH AT ASTORIA. T)fpfltJvn AVlrliic Causes Loss of About $25,000. ASTORIA, Ore., Aug. 13. A fire which started supposedly from elec tric wiring in a room at the rear of tho A. Dunbar Company's dry goods store about 8 o'clock In tho evening caused a property loss of fully $25, 000, two buildings and tho stock of goods they contained being damaged before the flames were extinguished. Tho principal losses are estimated as follows: A. Dunbar Company, damago to stock, principally by amoko and water, $18,000; Schol fiold & Mattson, dnmago to grocery stock, $4000; F. Johnson, phono graph supplies and household goods, $500; Johnson Bros., building, $1,500; Fulton & Dement, building, $1,500. GRANT COUNTY DRY. CANYON CITY, Oro., Aug. 13. ROSEBURG, Ore., Aug. 13. Roso McBeo Is suing Richard McBeo, for divorce. Plaintiff alleges that her husband falsely accused her of in fidelity and of trying to poison him. Sho alBO says In her complaint that ho ropeatcdly cursed hor and finally, on Juno 1, 190S, drovo hor from their homo at Bridge, Coos county. Another allegation Is that hor hus band has contributed only $6 toward her support for a year past. His gen eral cruol treatment, sho says, has vundormlned hor hoalth nnd affected her norvous system. Price's Children Are Celebrated. ALLEGANY, Ore., Aug. 13,. The J. H. Price home was the scene ot much merriment Saturday when a dozen happy children m,ot to cele brate Hazen Price's seventh birthday and Nina Poarl Price's sixth birth day. vTlie'y assembled about 11 o'clock. A dinner such as appeals to childish delight was served under tho shade of an apple tree. The afternoon was spent in playing games. Thoso present were Hazel Cowan, Gusslo Cowan, Myrl Stem merman, Mandio Defreese, Emma De freese, Cleo Carter, Nina Pearl Price, Georglo Stemmerman, Paul Kroeger, Clyde Dulley, Alton Dulley and Hazen Price. Hazen and Nina Pearl are thank ful for many beautiful presents re ceived. Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Roblson return ed to their camp in Price Grovo Sat urday after a trip to Marshfleld. Gene Terry has moved his family to a cozy nook in tho upper part of Price Grove. Mr. Nelson and daughter and fam ily visited Mrs. Nelson's camp over Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter of Mis souri are visiting Mrs. Carpenter's uncle, Mr. E. E. Edwards. SOME SNAKE STORIES. AI. Nichols of Empire, Claims to Huvo Killed Twenty-Six. Coos Bay In the past never claim ed any particular honors for snake stories, but it looks as if she has appropriations. Al. Nichols of Empire, came down tho Rogue river last week, alter a two weeks trip, and said his party had killed 2G rattlesnakes. This tale might have passed muster but when he told of rattlers plunging into tho trout streams and catching flsh, tho reporter commenced to wake up. Wedderburn Radium. OLD NASBY RETIRES. Win. Irwin Gives Up Postofllco at Ten Mile. ROSEBURG, Oro., Aug. 13. Mr. nnd Mrs. Win. Irwin wore In from Ten Mile today. After a continuous service of ovor 40 years Mr. Irwin has retired as postmaster at Ten Mile and tho postofllco has been changed to tho homo of Mrs. Lucy Cut-Up, who Is now tho postmistress there. WANT ORCHARD LANDS. Thousands of Acres Will Bo Convert ed Into Fruit Ranches. GRANTS PASS, Ore., Aug. 13. The demand for fruit lands near Grants Pass, is stronger this year than over before. Nearly all the available lands suitable for fruit havo been purchased, and these lands are under preparation for orchards, vine yards and berry fields. Land that could have been bought two years and threo years ago for $15 an acre, Is selling now for $150 nnd $250 an acre. These lands set to trees, aro selling for $300 an acre. A part of tho Elsman place, on which tho fam ous Elsman orchard Is located, wns sold a fow days since for $6,800. Sovoral thousand acres in and around Grants Pass, which havo been unused, will bo set to fruit trees this fall. Tho country Is developing rap Idly, and tho development is almost entirely along tho line of fruit. Ir rigation Is also being talked of strongly and a cooperative company will bo formed for the purpose of constructing an irrigating canal that will water all tho arid lands In and about this city. Tho wnter will bo taken from tho Roguo river. Tho preliminary sur vey for tho Roguo River Valley and Southern railway, an electric line thnt will bo built from Grants Pnss to Illinois valley, lias greatly increas ed tho demand for farms in that sec tion of Josophlno county. Tho building of this road will Increase the population of Kerby, Waldo and Hol land five fold within tho next threo or four years. It seems an assured fact thnt tho road will bo built as contracts for tho ties nro bolng lot by tho chief onglneer.
