Durett, who was granted a franchise to install an automatic telephone system on Coos Bay by the Marshfleld city council the other night, left this morning for Portland to close the negotiations for mate rials, etc. Mayor E. E. Straw prac tically promised Mr. Durett yester day, according to the latter's state ment, that he (Straw) would sign the franchise at once. This morning Mayor Straw was going over the franchise with City Attorney Farrln to determine whether ho would sign It or not. , There is still a mere possibility that Mr. Durett may purchase the local exchanges of the Pacific States Telephone Company. The securing of the franchise will enable him to drive a better bargain than ho could otherwlso havo dono. If ho secures tho Pnclfic. States' exchange, he will probably not take tho new franchlso but will merely lmprovo tho present system. NORTH BEND NEWS Mrs. V. Reicherts visited relatives in Marshfleld yesterday.
