" Ifr if '( ' COOS BAY TIMES AN INDEPENDENT REPUBLICAN NEWSPAPER PUBLISHED EVERY EVENING EXCEPT SUNDAY, AN D WEEKLY BY THE COOS BAY TIMES PUBLISHING COMPANY. Entered at the postofflco at Marsh field, Oregon, through the malls as second class mall matter. for transmission M. C. MALONEY Editor and Publisher. DAN E. MALONEY News Editor. A TEN THOUSAND CLUB NOTIGE TO CONTRACTORS. ATVENTY THOUSAND CLUB. Of course. Let us go to It with un tiring energy and never flagging faith, wondering only that the organization of such a club has been postponed until now In a city to which nature has given so fair a promise of growth and development. Iet us "go to It" too, with firm assurance that the twenty thousand Into which we work will be but a first round on the high ladder of Coos Bay's growth. Not far distant In years will be the day when ours will be a Thirty Thousand Club, then a Fifty Thousand Club, then a Hundred Thousand Club and finally a Half Million Club. Sounds to you like the midnight cy of a vision enamored dreamer, does It? Listen and determine If the truth may not bo held In a vision: INew York is the metropolis of the comparatively densely populated east. San Francisco Is the metropolis of the yetsparsely settled West. Up atfd down tho Atlantic coast within a- few hundred inHes of New York -are dozens of other cities located on the many harbors that dot the coast reaching Into the hundreds of thousands of population. Coos Bay pos sesses the only great natural harbor between Puget Sound and the Golden Gate. Coos Bay cities are built on a harbor that has back of it the richest of rich countries and the natural terminus of coming trans continental railway lines through which must pour the commerce of the east and west Say does It commence to dawn on you that there may be something in a dreamer's dream after all. Why is it that the metropolis of the east has about four million in habitants while the metropolis of the west has only .about one-eighth of that number? It is because the east Is far more densely populated than the west. Why Is It that there are scores of cities within a few hundred miles of New York that have hundreds of thousands population while within the same distance of San Francisco there is not one? The same reason again applies scarcity of population. Just so surely as the population of the west will have Increased by hundreds of thou sands in a not distant dny, just that surely will the population of Coos Bay proportionately Increase. The railroads aro already recognizing the natural advantages of the location of Coos Bay and tho builders of the steel highways of commerce have their eyes upon it. Above all, the Almighty has recognized It from the beginning. He recognized it when he made this great harbor here, hedged In by sheltering hills and back of them made valleys with fields of richness, where a genial sun smiles wel come to all who erect homes, labor and receive labors certain reward; and Ho recognized It, too, when He made this a great natural channel tor a large part of the human tides that ebb and flow between the Orient and Oecldent. A Twenty Thousand Club? Well, I should say so! And then It will be a Thirty Thousand Club, and a Fifty Thousand Club and a Hundred Thousand Club until this natural location of a mighty population has fulfilled its manifest destiny. Oh, yo of little faith, go 'way back and alt down, and grunt your grunts of dissent together, but as for the rest or us wo will keep our eyes fixed on that splendid future of develop ment and prosperity which awaits our beloved Bay. Some day, perhaps, fifty years from now, somebody will chance to turn the pages of an old, old file of papers, and he will run across this article, and rea'ding will say, "Why, the homely old cuss was a prophet for once In bis life, anyway." Then, h3 will read a little farther, and smil ing at tho thought, will say: "To think there was a time when Coos Bayites thought they would have a good sized City if it had 20,000 in habitants! As I look at our great city now, the Idea makes me laugh." And with that smile I leave him pausing merely long enough to pledge with him our Marshfleld, North Bend, Eastslde, the thriving Coos Bay cities of today, the mighty Coos Bay city of tomorrow. Notice Is hereby given that sealed bids will be received by the common council of the City of Marshfleld, Coos county, Oregon, up until 8 o'clock p. m., Tuesday, July 14, 1908, for the Improvement of 'C street and 'C avenue from the west line of Fourth street to the east lino of Da vidson street in E.
