Address All Communications to COOS BAY DAILY TIMES Mnrshfield ..... Oregon SLEEP A VICE. Tho mere statement that sleeping is an extraneous habit and not es sential to the well being of the human machinery, recently attribut ed to Thomas E. Edison, is not par ticularly convincing. It Is a most attractive theory, Indeed, but the average man with duties to perform from day to day will be willing to accept it as such, and without at tempting to Improve his diurnal rou tine. There is also a popular hypo thesis that the taking of nutrition is a habit, or fad, but no one has ever lived to prove the fact. Mr. Edison says that in prehis toric days when the world was cast in perpetual night, men' acquired the vico of sleeping primarily, because they would have bored themselves Insufferably by remaining continu ally sensate, there being really no thing of interest to behold or under take. When the universal gloom lifted a bit, the Inhabitants of tho globe had become addicted to tho habit of going to bed at frequent in tervals, and although they might have staid up without restful intPr ludes from Infnncy to old age, they could not shake the old notion that sleep was included in the cosmic scheme. They foolishly slept nights, thereby losing about a third of their none too extended lives. Mr. Edison makes a serious charge against mankind. Since tho birth of Christ tho world has wasted nearly 700 years. Tho fourteenth century should have produced flying ma chines, and automobiles, and Dread noughts, and tho commission form of city government, while, by tho natural progression of things, wo should now have reached tho stage of development which will not be at tained until tho twenty-fifth century. And all because of a false idea which circumstances hammered Into the protoplasmic brains of our fore fathers ages ago! The great inventor avers that it is not yet too late to amend our be nighted ways. Begin by sleeping fewer hours each night, he urges, nnd eventually the unnatural desire for rest will vanish. If tho scientist has made a bona fide discovery he Is entitled to the gratitude of this and succeeding generations for tho finest gift thnt was over bestowed by one human being upon another twenty additional years In which to take pleasure from tho world. It is a pity Mr. Edison Is such a joker. Of all the men I never met Not one so gladly would I know As Adam, Villa Paradise, The first estate in Apple Row. For how delightful it would bo Some private mental grounds to find All dewy fresh as springing grass Untrampled premises of mind. Where only Eve and Nature caused The sweet reactions of a soul Unvexed by all the sages' lore That bulges as the aeons roll. Most truthfully might Adam say, "I think" and never once excite The wonder If the thought were his Or shimmer pale of borrowed light. "Oh, tell me, Adam," I would say, (If such a tete-a-tete might be), "Just what you think of women now, And what of yon forbidden tree?" And never once would Adam quote What Maeterlink or Milton said;. But serve me fresh his own Ideas Homo raised in Fancy's fragrant bed. But now, alas, where may I And A mind with grassy lanes and nooks Untrampled by another's thoughts, Unmustifled by pedant books? The mental rills of babyhood May scarce a single decade run Ere tributaries they receive From every land beneath the sun. I yearn to hear the ocean roll Without a single hint from Byron, Nor use some other poet's ear To catch the sea notes of a siren. I want to love and quite forget Ten thousand things that men have said About its rainbow make-up fair, That hangs Illusion o'er our head. So fade away, old sages all, And leave me to myself awhile; I'm fain to learn of Nature's self Tho Esperanto of her smile. Selected. The people who live at Gold Beach are not all Gold Bugs. Only a man after her own heart Interests some Coos Bay girls. A llttlo dimple has caused many a man to have heart trouble. The more justice some Coos Bay men get the less they want to. talk about it. A man can overtake a lot of peo ple on tho road to ruin but he sel dom meets any one. The Mlllicoma Bnchelor says the less some women have In their heads tho bigger their hat. "There are times," remnrked the Cynic, "when the truth is about as Inspiring as a cold fried egg." Some people on Coos Bay aro not satisfied with the road to success. They think it should bo an asphalt pavement. Tho Knocker says that while Co quillo may have the champion ball team, Marshfleld has tho champion high-ball team. "Error is much worse than ignor ance," remarks the Mlllicoma Phi losopher. "It Is better to know no thing thnn to know what Isn't true." Ivy Condron wants to know If a town is called "she" because of hav ing such broad outskirts or bo causo it requires a man to run her. M. J. Mnngan says that because a harbor polo is red white and blue Is no sign that one may tako any more llliorty there than any other place, A Coos Bay woman remarked to hor husband tho othor day that sho wished she had boon born a man. And what did that bruto do but say ho wished so, too. Thoro aro soino men on Coos Bay who will wait on a bank. four hours for a fish that doesn't intend to blto but won't wait flvo minutes for thoir wives to get ready for church. REFRIGERATOR servlco is what makes better meat in Portland. You can get It on Coos Bay now at Tho Sanitary market and tho prices are right too. L. W.
