John M. Linden, pastor of the First Baptist church, has Instituted a vigorous cru sade against the memhers of his church picking hops, stating that It is encouraging the liquor Interests. In a sermon Sunday night, beforo a crowded church, he said. The plan to pave 'C street be tween Front and Second streets, Broadway between 'C and 'B,' and may; bo to 'A' street or farther, with asphalt, has been practically con sumated. Contractor McCann of Eu reka, who has been In consultation with the property owners has decid ed to order his machinery here and start the work soon and rush it to completion. A large number of Front street property owners have signified their desire to change from treated block to asphalt paving for that thorough fare and this may be done soon. Luckily ho delayed his planting and Is not troubled by tho weather. Opens New Gas Mains. Tho new mains were tested last night, tho pipes being tapped at several points in order to allow tho air to escape. Entertainment Is Free. Tho en tertainment which Superintendent Golden has arranged to be given Wednesday evening, a featuro of which will bo an address by State Superintendent Ackerman, will bo free. Tho bounty of flvo cents apleco offered for the rodents Is rapidly exterminat ing them, many boys killing scores of them. A hundred or so were killed In March and tho slaughter will probably continue as long as tho bounty Is offered. Minstrel Show at tho Crystal. The headllner at tho Crystal last night was a short minstrel skotch by C. S. Dodge, VInco Pratt, and Bret McCullough. Sec retary Walter Lyon of tho Chamber of Commerce, is planning to secure a number of former Minnesota resid ents as tho speakers for the next regular meeting of tho body on Fri day night. Ho has not completed tho list yet. REV. C. C. RARICK, M. E. Minister of Astoria, and P. J. Brix, a tim ber man of the samo city, aro Cooa Bay visitors this week. Frank Reeder has on- city officials against automoblltsts speeding their machines on tho plank roadway of North Front street. Ho says that they hit a clip of forty miles per hour or so, that tho chauf feurs aren't experienced drivers and that tho llfo and limb of pedestrlnns aro constantly In danger.
