Preaches Against lloppicklng.
OREGON CITY, April 28. (Special) Rev. John M. Linden,
pastor of the First Baptist church, has Instituted a vigorous cru
sade against the memhers of his church picking hops, stating that
It is encouraging the liquor Interests. In a sermon Sunday night,
beforo a crowded church, he said. "It requires a quickened con
science to crystalline action against hop-picking, which is part of
the process of beer-making."

The plan to pave 'C street be
tween Front and Second streets,
Broadway between 'C and 'B,' and
may; bo to 'A' street or farther, with
asphalt, has been practically con
sumated. Contractor McCann of Eu
reka, who has been In consultation
with the property owners has decid
ed to order his machinery here and
start the work soon and rush it to
completion.
A large number of Front street
property owners have signified their
desire to change from treated block
to asphalt paving for that thorough
fare and this may be done soon. In
this case, it will be paved before the
fair here in August, probably.

mains were tested last night, tho
pipes being tapped at several points
in order to allow tho air to escape.

seven rats that were killed in April

ing them, many boys killing scores
of them. A hundred or so were
killed In March and tho slaughter
will probably continue as long as

The headllner at tho Crystal last
night was a short minstrel skotch by
C. S. Dodge, VInco Pratt, and Bret
McCullough. From tho opening

not a dull moment In the entire act.
