Address All Communications to COOS WAY DAILY TIMES Jlnrshficld ..... Oregon A MOYAIILK XORTII POLE. Captain Amundsen located tho mag netic pole in some out of the way place, and now an English theorist is convinced that the north polo has shifted from its supposed moorings. That is to say. If tho calculations of nil tho known explorers down to Peary Lave been correct there is no like lihood that a man extending his tracks northward to tho limit would strike the polo. This is because It has been shifting eastward for years and now keeps moving. Eventually he thinks it will bo in Siberia. If it has anything to do with sending blizzards down the American continent wo shall gladly make the czar a present of this cold storage plant. It Is doubtful whether this in genious Englishman's theory will cause a lessening of exploration par ties. Men will bo Just as crazy to prove that the polo Is not there as they have been to prove that It is there. Perhaps some daring party will make a permanent camp on tho alleged route of tho pole's travel and wait for it to come around. It'is said that accumu lations of ice are responsible for tho shifting of tho pole. Eventually it will occur to somebody to dynamite tho mountains of Ice to make it flow away faster and thus force the polo to move on. Another Idea would bo to concentrate powerful aerial currents of electricity upon tho ice and melt it Anyway, If the pole Is movable some thing Is doing It, and the theory opens up a beautiful field for speculation iu the domain where old notions havo long been exploded because nobody could prove them. A IIKIGHT SIDE. All the money and blood of the Goulds and Yuu.lcrbllts are not taint ed by tho follies of the few repiv soiitathes of these families. Helen Gould has laid the foundation of uohlu works which will be a monument to bent back the vnes of scandal bet in motion by the follies of her reckless brother and sister. Now Consiielo Vanderhlll, the Duchess of Marllior oiigli, has turned from a dazzling ca reer to engage in the work of uplift ing humanity. Itcc-cutly she told the rich women of New York and of all America, for that matter, to cease squandering money for luxuries and devote it to the needs of their less for tunate brothers and sisters. Tho example of Helen Gould and tho wise counsel of Consiielo Vander bllt nre much needed by many women .of wealth today. That form of vulgar display iu the expenditure of wealth which has grown amazingly the last few years has no excuse for being. A liberal use of wealth Is right, but lav ish dissipation llnds imitators among those who can 111 afford It, leads to bankruptcy for tho many and Im presses upon tho masses the false view of llfo that smartness and vulgarity are tho highest good. Human nature is weak at best and needs no example in high places to stimulate its follies. Tho best type of high society Is that of tho old New England regime which holds wealth In stewardship to bo devoted to uolilo ends for tho benefit of large numbers). This typo Is not now confined to any section, but It Is a pleasure to tlntl n Gould and a Van derbllt conspicuous among tho noble workers for humanity. JIT1ZKNS OF COOS AND CURRY. A considerable number of tho citi zens of Coos county having express ed a iloslre that I should nlnco my titautn hoforo you as a candidate for th lkisltio.i of Joint senator and as 1 havo consented so to do, therefore) make tho following declaration, if olectctl It will bo my earnest en 4anvur to ailvancu nnd protect your AntorostB without regard to private idJ-juei or party alllllatlons, H, D, HUME, fly Charles Scnnlon, Field Secretary of the Assembly's Temperance Committee. If more liquor Is sold where there are no saloons than where there are, would brewers, distillers and whole sale dealers, who own about seventy five per cent, of saloons, pay license, rent, taxes, insurance, attorney's fees, and contribute largo sums of money to influence the press, to pub lish and distribute literature, and in other ways to obtain license, all to lessen tho amount of their sales? Would tho liquor men now be main taining five national organizations, at heavy expense, to oppose all pro hibitory measures, if such measures did not interfere with the traffic? Would they keep an expensive lobby at tho national capital to urge the restoration of the canteen or army saloon, and to prevent a prohibitory clause in the Statehood bill for Ok lahoma and Indian Territory if they were not financially Interested? Are beer wagons and "speak easies" and "blind pigs" and liquor agents alone, worse than all these evils plus the open saloon? Do not tho records of hundreds of towns show that saloons do not lessen these nuisances, but affords addi tional temptation to drink, and is the spawning place of the moat degrad ing vices? How do saloons help a town? Do they make better fathers, husbands, sons or brothers? Do they make mothers, wives and children comfort ablo and happy? Do they help to build up churches and make it easy for parents to keep children in school? Do not saloons mean drunkenness and does not drunkenness mean less steady and less skillful labor? Do not sober men work more and retain their earning capacity longer than drinking men? Do not life insur ance companies say that an abstainer is from 30 per cent, to 40 per cent. bettor risk than a drinker? Will not the business of a town be deter mined by the amount of goods which its citizens can buy and pay for? Is not the purchasing capacity of a man limited to his earning capacity? Do not sober men as a rule earn more than drinking men, and do not their families consume more and therefore help business? Is the credit of a drinking man as good as that of an abstainer, if not why? Do not all political economists agree that the morals of a bread-winner are fully as important a factor in his value to the community as his physical and In tellectual qualities? Can a man buy beer and beef with the same money? Who pays the license and all other expenses of the saloon keeper? What would go with that money if it did not go for liquor? If It Is such a disgraceful thing to sell liquor that you do not want to nssoclato with the man who does it, is it a good thing for you to vote for him to do a had thing? If it is a bad thing to be a drunkard is it a good thing to license men to make drunkards? If a saloon is a good thing why do those who patronize it desire to ho shielded from view by screens while they do so, and why must it bo kept away from churches and schools and out of residence dis tricts? Is there anything In logic, morals, reason, religion or common sense which says that tho church should throw down her arms and strike her colors when sin forms a political al liance? If Christ said ho came not to regulate the works of tho devil but to destroy them, Is It not enough for church members than they he as their Lord? Is it right to voto for a thing which no decent man ought to de fined? Is it right to voto against a man who advocates licensing a saloon iu your home town and voto for a man who advocates licensing saloons throughout the State and the Nation? Is it right to voto against llconso when that is tho only Issue and voto for license- when it is com bined with other Issues? Is not tho liconso system tho strong tower to which tho traffic doth resort in Its every tlmo of need? Is It not "tho revenue which It pays" which Is always mentioned by tho "trndo" when this evil Is on trial for Its llfo? Is not llcenso tho most dan gerous and cleceptlvo expedient yet tried to defer or defeat tho over throw of tho trafflc? If a thing Is so demoralizing that It must bo prohi bited on Sundays and election days, and so dangerous that It must bo for bidden in caso of riots, fires or other occasions of great excitement, ought It to bo permitted at any time? If Mayor Jones In Minneapolis, and .Governor Folko iu Missouri can close tho saloons on Sunday, Is it not proof that other executive ofllcors can onforco tho law if they will to do so? Is tho govonimont moro Jealous of rovonuo than of justico?
