The careless use of firearms by members of pleasure parties on the rivers and Inlets running out of Coos Bay Is the cause of much complaint by residents near the streams. Nu merous Instances of narrow escapes from bullets are reported and some of the ranchers are almost frantic lest some member of their family bo killed. It is stated that many of these stray bullets find a dangerous lodg ing ground on account of the Ignor ance of somo concerning the glanc ing caused by the water. Tho ranchers generally I'artmont. like to see the excursionists have a good timo so long as they do not provo a inonaco to their lives or property. Unless tho excursionists begin to exercise more caro, the ran chers declare they will resort to a means of compelling them to be care ful as shown by tho following letter: Children in Danger. SUNNY NOOK FARM, April 29. Editor Coos Bay Times: Will you kindly allow mo space in Tho Times to call attention to tho reckless prac tice of promiscuous shooting along tho waterways of the country? Last Sunday, about -1 p. in., a gasoline launch, tho nnnio of which I have also of a part of those on board, wlillo passing my place on Coos river, a number of shots were fired, If not point-blank at my houso sufficiently so that several bullets struck In tho yard where my children were playing and one bullet struck a bedroom win dow passing Into the room. Now, I do not know if thero Is n law to prohibit this practice or not, but I do know there is a moral law that gives me the right to protect my family nnd that law Is going to bo enforced in tho futuro in such a man ner as tho courts will sustain me In If possible, but If Impossible to en force it in that way. Well, I am go ing to protect my family regardless of consequences. This particular party of Sunday excursionists are no worso than dozens of others In this respect, but It Is a practlco that must bo stopped or serious trouble may bo the consequences. Yours for ponoo, S. W. SHERMAN. Wherever I go, I find property be longing to the Southern Oregon Company, and where thero aro m chards on it, in each and every in stanto tho orchards aro a disgrace to tho county and a detriment to tho neighborhood, a nuisance to all enterprising neighbors. Just wait a little, gentlemen of the Southern Oregon Company, I wait only for tho commissioners of tho department to come here. Mean time give mo the deuce if you like. It suits me, I can stand It and your properties shall receive tho atten tion they deserve. If I exceeded my authority have mo ousted and disgraced; If not, I will do my duty as sworn to, not because I am unreasonable or pre judiced, but only to do justice to oiio and all. You will hear more of the man who tries to do what ho Is selected for to do so. Meantime If you (tho Southern Oregon Company), are not avoiding tho law, see that the work Is done and thou, and not sooner, will 1 give credit to jou. Respectfully, M. G. POHI,.
