Bode, Manager. Phone 671 It is estimated that a fence post, which under ordinary circumstances will last for perhaps two years, will, If given preservative treatment cost ing about 10 cents, last eighteen years. The service of other timbers, such as railroad ties, telephone poles, and mine props, can be doubled and often trebled by Inexpensive treatment. Today, when tho cost of wood Is a big item to every farmer, every stockman, every railroad man ager to everyone, in fact, who must use timber where it Is likely to decay this Is a fact which should be care fully considered. It is easy to see that If the length of time timbers can bo used Is doubl ed, only half as much timber will bo required as before and only one-half as much money will bo spont In the purchase of timber. Moreover, many wrods which were for a long time considered almost worthless can bo tieated and made to last as long as tho scarcer and more expensive kinds. Of the actual saving in dollars and cents through preservative treatment, a fence post such as was mentioned at the beginning might servo as one example. The post is of loblolly I-Ine, and costs, untreated, about 8 cents, or, Including tho cost of sot ting, 14 cents. It lasts about two years. Compounding interest at 5 rer cent, tho annual charge of such n post Is 7.53 cents; tin1 is, it costs 7.53 cents a year to keep the post in service. lr''bervativo treatmont crsting I ) cents will Increase its length of liTa !o about eighteen years. In this :as-3 the total cost i.f tho post, set, is 21 cults, which compounded at 5 per Cs-nt gives an annual charge of 2.04 cents Thus tho saving duo in ireauaoni it &.4y cents a year. Assuming 'ha't there ato 200 posts per mile, I litre is a saving each year for every niJie of fence of a sum i;ulraliiiit tc the interest on $219.- C0. In tho same way preservative treat ment will increase tho length of life of a loblolly pine railroad tio from , five years to twelvo years and will re duce tho annual charge from 11.52 cents to 9.48 cents, which amounts to a saving of $58.75 por mile. It is estimated that 150,000 acres are required each year to grow tim ber for tho anthracite coal mines alone. Tho average life of an un seated mine prop is not more than three years. By propor preservative treatment it can bo prolonged by many times this figure. Telophono and telegraph poles, which in ten or twelve years, or oven less, decay bo badly at the ground lino that thoy ihavo to be removed, can, by a nimple treatment of their butts, bo made to Jast twenty or twenty-flvo years. Sap sblngles, which are almostvalueless in their natural stato, can erslly be treated and made to outlast oven painted shingles of tho most decay resistant woods. Thousands of doll ar:, are lost coy year by tho so-called bluing" of freshly sawed sap wood lumber. This can be prevented by proper treatment, and nt a cost sc small as to put It within the reach of tho smallest operator. In tho South the cheap and abunb ant loblolly pine, one of tho easiest of all woods to treat, can by proper preparation bo mado tp take tho place of tho high-grade longleaf plno for many purposes. Black and tupelo sums and jother llttlc-used woods have a now and increasing import ance because of tho possibility ot preserving them from decay it small cost. In the Northeastern and Lake States are tamarack, hemlock, beech, birch and maple, and the red and black oaks, all of which by proper treatment mcy help to replace tne fatt-dimin'shlng white oa" and ce dar. In ilia States of the Mississippi Valley the j.rcss'ng fence-post pro It1 em may bo greatly relloved hv; treating su-ja sreciep as cottonwool, wi Jew and hpekberry.
