CONVEX Tho Republican electors or Coos county, itato of Oregon, are advised that a Republican county convention will bo held In tha court house, Co auille City, at 10 o'clock a. m. Tues day, March 24, 1908, for tho follow ing purposes: To perpctuato party organization; to discus sand recom mend Republican candidates for county and stato offices. Tho representation by precincts will bo one delegate for each ten Totea or fraction thereof cast at the general election of Juno I, 190G. Tho following is a list of the dele gates to -which each precinct is en titled: Bandon 16 Burton . 2 Coaledo 3 Coos City 2 North Coos Itlver 3 Coos RlYer 3 East CoQuillo 10 West CoQuillo Seer Park 1 Dora 3 Emplro 4 Enchanted 3 Four Mllo 2 Lake .' 2 Leo 2 North Marshfleld 9 Bouth Marshfleld 18 Missouri 3 Myrtlo Point 15 Newport 3 North Bend IS Norway G Parkersburg 4 Prosper 3 Riverton 4 Rowland 1 Bouth Slough 1 Sumner 3 Ten Mile 2 It is recommended that precinct caucuses bo held not later than Sat urday, March 21. P. L. PHELAN. Chairman Rep. Co. Central Comm. E. L. C. FARRIN. Secretary. and has tried to run them down, but no candldato or prominent Repub lican has yet been found who is not ready to go on record as entirely op posed to any endorsements by the convention. OREGON POULTRY. Fruit, dairying and other indust ries of Oregon have all been given their share of publicity, but poultry raising is rarely mentioned outs'de of tho publications which are either devoted to poultry or have a special department for it. ?5, 000, 000 an nually is a very conservative esti mate of tho returns from this indus try to Oregon farmers, and yet thous ands of cases of eggs are shipped in every year from the middle west to supply tho demand here. Here poultry raisers say that the climate of Western Oregon In particular Is conducive to very rapid and health ful growth there Is one community alone in Southern Oregon that an nually markets between $40,000 and $50,000 worth of turkeys. Coos County offers exceptional oppor tunities in the poultry line. COUNTY CANDIDATES NOT TO BE RECOMMENDED. Tho trend of public opinion on tho subject of party conventions in the state of Oregon is plainly in favor of holding such conventions solely for tho purposo of placing tho party right in tho matter of Its platform of principles and taking such action as will hold tho party together mid provide for its Internal administra tion. All tho county comonttons ot tho Ropubllcnn party have thus lnr refused to so far vlolato tho spirit of tho primary law as to attompt tho endorsement or recommendation of candidates. This letusnl shows that tho people attending these conven tions hnvo a pioper appreciation of tho sontiniont of tho people. Ore- gonlans will not tolerate any uhnngo in their legislative method of select ing candidates for olllco thioiigh pii mury olectlons nt piesent. It is safe t.o say that if any number of dele gates at a convention should proceed to express a preference for a candl dato for any olllco, and heek to as scrlbo such preference to the Repub lican paity, tho candidate endorsed would bo overwhelmingly doleated at tho primaries. The people have chosen not to dolegato tho powor to select candidates to a convention, but to select tliom formally at the primaries. Thoro Is a convention to bo hold by tho Republicans of this county Mnreh 24, but it Is being called for tho purposo of declaring principles, and not to advance the lntorests of any candidate or candidates. Tho committee has been criticised in cortaln quarters for calling It at all, but their Justification Is sulll clout and plain when they conllno Its purposo to tho single ouo of making resolutions and platforms nnd pro viding for a campaign. Whoovor shall bo a candldato at tho primaries for any olllco as a Ropubllcnn must doom himself pledged to stand on tho Republican platlorm which tho convention shall provide There Is no other way In which tho integrity of tho party can be proberved. if, as some hnvo asserted, a faction is anxious to bocuro ondorsomont for its candldnto, it Is not concelvablo that any faction can entertain so foolish a political plan. The peoplo would regard such endorsement us a pleco of insolence which thoy would nuor oxcuso. It would perhaps dis rupt tho party, but It most cortaluly would result In tho overwhelming dofeat of those who wore bo unfor tunato as to receive such lmportlnont ondorsomont or recommendation. Tho Tlmoa has hoard thoso rumors SALT FOR LIVE STOCK. Tho requirement that all cattle, horses and sheep grazing under per mit on the National Forests be given salt at frequent intervals is a re gulation which has been found to go a long way in protecting the range and conserving the forage ciop. Experience has shown that the want of salt makes stock restless. If cattle and horses are not supplied as they need It, they roam and wander, haunting old salting grounds used In previous seasons, trampling the forage plants Instead of eating them, pawing the ground, and in other ways injuring the range. But if their cravings are supplied they scatter peacefully over the pasture grounds and feed at their leisure. Salt is so necessary to tho easy and profitable handling of sheep on tho range, that no flockmaster would think of getting along without it. Ii sheep do not recelvo their usual supply it is only with great difllculty that they can bo held in bonds or kept In camp at night. So tar as sheep aro concerned, no regulation by law Is really necessary, because the owners, tor their own conven ience, will salt their flocks. But cattle are not herded, and tho owners might neglect to salt them, If the ic-gulatlons wero not strictly en forced. Stock on different ranges require varying quantities of salt. Sheep need less on dry raugo than on green. An average quantity for 1, 000 head of sheep would bo from 1000 to 1500 pounds each year. For a like number of cattle, from 5000 to 10000 pounds a year Is required. Hoises need less than cattle. Old hunters, in tho days of the pioneers, know that deer and buffa lo traveled long distances to lick salt in sallno springs. Tho Blue Licks on Licking River, In Kentucky, and a blniflar mineral spring on Elk River, In West Virginia, wore famous foi tho herds of deer, buffalo and elk which frequented them. Tho adjacent giotind was so deeply tramped that tho marks wero to be seen many years alter tho places ceased to bo visited by thos,o anl-nmls. It Is difficult to know at what mo ment love begins. It Is less difficult to know It has begun. A thousand her alds proclaim it to tho listening air; a thousand messengers betray it to tho eye. Tone, act, attitude and look, tho signals upon tho countenance, the elec tric telegrnph of touch all these bo tray the yielding citadel before tho word itself Is uttered which, like tho key surrendered, opens every avenue nnd gato of entrance and renders re treat impossible. O "Here," said the Closo Observer, as he handed The Times man a clip ping, "just ask Walter McFarland how ho would like to handlo deposit slips like that: "A deposit slip that startled the bank officers was recently handed into the bank at Norwood, O. Tho slip, by actual measurement, was sixty-two feet long) and contained record of hundreds of checks and Items of deposit. Tho deposit was made by ono of the largo factories In Norwood, and in order to make the deposit in bulk additional pieces of paper were pasted to tho deposit slip to make it one piece. Most of the checks and items wero for small amounts, tho total deposit repre sented by the list being $00,162.97. When tho deposit slip was presented Cashier McEvilley almost threw a fit, and when ho took tho second glance at it realized tho tremendous amount of clerical work necessary to record tho deposit on tho books. This ad ditional work accounted for the clerks remaining In tho bank until late that night. C. H. M. Atkins, president of tho bank, states that tho slip is the long est deposit slip ever presented at a local bank. Its length was measured for curiosity, and found to bo exactly sixty-two feet.
