TJ.3 spirit of consolidation was tho Tcatnro of all the speeches and toasts ai. ILe North Bend banquet held un der, xJe auspices of the Chamber of Commerce of that city tho other even ing. It seemed to be well recognized &&.. no tinio ior Uie consummation .".a plan was near tat hand. As oik jealter, Col. Walter Lyons, sec-a-ctewy of tho Marshlleld Chamber of Gb erce said, in order to get tho Sc t of that inestimable advertis ing hich the census of 11)10 will j&r., ho educational work of prepar Jm.C 'or consolidation and tho union Jrai arts.ll cities on Coos Bay in one cor- jnjn.tion, must begin now. As an .oth( speaker said, tho waters of 'Ccr Bay roll Into and roll out of it, siatr a and they are the only united tote In the district. The oneness of Affic ny certainly does arguo with overwhelming power In favor of one ness for the community which has satbered on its shores. If Coos Bay were broken up into a number of .small bays not one of them would command attention. The same thing ccrs with respect to the community csriilch Is broken up into small towns, jxo ono of which Is largo enough to raiuut for much in the list of Oregon iaiica. Bat tho important thing for Coos ZBqy cities Is to get together as one jxrobably under tho borough plan adopted by Greater New York and .snooted for Greater San Francisco. This they should do within the suc ceeding two years In order, as Col. .Corona suggested, to havo the ad Tinn'age of standing high up on the li3t of Oregon cities in that census. 2C ono examines tho census of 1900 lit; flrds Marshfleld with a population jqU about 1200. The world, looking Sr Oregon's important cities in that ssaaBiia list, has, for ten years seen joa s jggestion of Marshlleld's Import .rzmiA. Empire, in that census, has tlM -red insignificant. As for North Beau, It had no place there. But In laiu ilie Federal government will number all the people of tho United Slaud and the numbering will stand for ii n years as the only information fjtfi jjreat majority of the people of taiu v. orld will havo as to what tho importance or population of our asll' . may be. It .Marshfleld then has uuviii thousand, North Bond llvo -thousand, Eastsldo ono thousand, flvo JuwUrud, and Empire five hundred, "Uioy will .suggest nothing of tho csreatuess of Coos Bay. But if they ;ara united as one with a population saC fourteen thousand, United States jsnnators, presidents, representatives, capitalists and people everywhere v-will as easily ncnutro a just estimate a what this city Is, as what Oreijon Is, for It will then 3Va and appear to bo, ono of tho most $i f Kmaldornblo cities in Oregon. .Such a consolidated city will havo -prestige, power, iullucnco nnd famo. .Such a city will be ablo to care for its "rrartjor., lncreaso its commerco, at tract railroads, attract ocean trallic, shhI inoro than nil dovlso and carry t-wit plans to develop Its immediate jfcrlbu'ary country. It can adopt a -common system of street naming and ncinhoiing. It can havo all tho fea ttnron of an up to dato municipality 3m common and its city government -will bo a force for tho progress of the port Tho Chambers of Commerco tfliould request their conforonco com xaoittrp to act on tho matters BUbmlt rcfl 10 them nnd to report a plan which may bo published to tho peo , ypia nnd tho people should havo a srem-fl opportunity to discuss It and Heuomo familiar with It. Such action Twould not necessarily bo final but would bo in tho lino of educational work nnd all its features could bo Jtalrly well understood when, a year -or so hence, the proposition could bo .-acted on dollnitoly. It has be come so common a practice that con servative men dislike to discuss it because of the necessity of having to argue its foulness with men unsus pected of harboring the idea of pal liation. Tho day will come when normal honesty will be worth nothing as a principal, and tho shrewdness to filch and steal and despoil will be the measure of fitness for public and private employ, If this indifference Is not abated, says an exchange. Every ma.n who deliberately makes light of grafting confesses his own moral weakness and Impugns tho strength of character of the man he is talk ing to; there Is something vicious in the mind that tolerates, and declares, tho apathetic view of this wide-spread national sin. It is the patriotic duty of all men to emphatically and In variably discountenance it wherever I,t Is found. MUSIC 11 Y TELEPHONE The uso of tho telephone Is rapidly expanding until now no one will ven ture to say just where it will end. Ono largo city of tho world gets its news by telephone and It hasn't been long since In Idaho a couple marched to tho matrimonial altar to the strains of a wedding march played on a piano twenty miles away and heard over tho telephone. Tho following description, there fore, given by tho Baltimoro News, of a plan to provido music to telephone subscribers, does not seem so im probable: Telephone subscribers may soon be ablo to havo as much music, vocal or Instrumental, as they desire In their homes, If a series of experi ments now being made by George II. Webb provo successful. All that will bo required will bo to call on central and ask for whatever selec tion is desired, attach a specially constructed receiver and tho music fills tho room. Already much suc cess has boen attained by Mr. Webb In Ills experiments, and patonts have been applied for tho devices designed in connection with tho transmission and receiving of tho music. Mr. Webb declined to havo any thing to say about his plans for sending music out over tolephono lines from a central station. Ho hns boon experimenting with various de vices to accomplish this for over two years. Tho music is of tho disc record character and tho apparatus used In reproducing this music is ot Mr. Wobb's own Invention. Tho cent ral station is equipped with a do vlco to operato tho disc and thero aro specially constructed transmitters and recolvors. Tho discs nro opornt ed on turnstiles, which aro operated by electric power. This takes tho placo of tho mechanical working of tho ordinary talking machine. Unless all signs are false it would seem that tho long road which Coos , Bay, Coos County and Oregon have been jogging along on for the past score of years is about to turn. From Washington comes word that Sena tor Tillman, the democratic demo crat from "old Carliny" state, has taken up the cause of Oregon. From Portland comes word that suit has been filed against the Southern Ore gon Company and the Coos Bay I Wagon Road Company to recover ,13,000 acres of rich land which has been illched from tho people. Fol ' lowing Is the dispatch from Washing ton: j "The Senate adopted the Tillman . resolution requesting the President to inform, the Senate what action has I been taken by the Department rela j five to violation of tho land-grant laws in Oregon and Washington by the Southern Pacific Railroad." Hero is an excerpt regarding the filing of the suit against tho land monopolists: "Through a suit in equity filed by 01 plaintiffs in tho United States Cir cuit Court an attempt Is being made to forco the Southern Oregon Com pany and tho Coos Bay Wagon Road Company to sell 13,000 acres of land in tho Coos Bay Wagon Road grant for $2.50 per acre. Tho suit makes Attornoy-Goneral Bonnparto and tho United States de fendants and is based upon a resolu tion introduced in tho Senate recently by Senator Tillman seeking to force tho holding companies to abandon their claims on tho property or to fulfill tho terms of tho Government grants by soiling tho land at tho stipulated price of $2.50 per acre. JTho various people who filed on the lands did so recently at Empire City. ! "John It. Horron and others against tho Southern Oregon Com pany is tho titlo of tho suit. Tho papers filed In tho caso contain over 100 pages of typewritten matter." Read tho Want Ads. UF TAT WW la &.
