Jotjes, commission mer chant of Opal City, was in town last Saturday on business. Attorney W. II. Coble and Miss Elizabeth Richards, prominent boosters of Bend, were visitors in Madras Sunday. Attorney Lewis II. Irving and Recorder Jackson spent Sunday iishing on the Deschutes river near South Junction. Rev. Charles A. Sias will con duct services next Sunday morn ing and evening at the Christian church. You are cordially in vited to attend. A jolly crowd of young people attended the dance at Fisher's, six miles from town, last Satur day night. Those attending re port an excellent time and good music, a large phonograph play ing irresistably until midnight. Mrs. McFarland, a well known pioneer woman of Grass Valley, was a guest for a short time Monday morning of Mrs. Dr. Snook. She was on her return to her home at Ashwood after a visit with her daughter, Mrs. French, at Bend. Dr. Gale returned Tuesday evening from Portland where he went on a business trip. He says the Italian who was stabbed in a fight at Opal City about two weeks ago underwent an opera tion at St. Vincent's hospital a few dayB ago and is slowly re covering from his serious wounds. Zell and Shugert have a dance advertised for Saturday night, September 23. These gentlemen propose to give regular Saturday night dances during the winter, this being the third one they have advertised. Proof of the popularity of these gatherings is attested by the largely increased crowds at each dance. w .... 1 . ' sjsl Clarence W. Rutledge, nephew of Mrs. Dr. Snook, was a visitor at the home of the latter over Sunday. Mr. Rutledge is a wheat inspector for the E. 0. L. Co., and travels extensively through the eastern part of the state in the interests of his com pany. He says that fully one third of the wheat in Sherman county was badly damaged by the recent rains, the dampness causing the wheat to sprout in in the stack. His visit here was to ascertain the conditions of the wheat crop in this district. Mr. and Mrs. Howard W. Tur ner returned Tuesday night from Portland where they spent a week visiting at the state fair and other points of interest on the coast. The attendance at the fair was considerably short ened owing to the continued rainy weather, this latter ele ment making good racing im possible. The livestock and pro duce exhibits at the fair, how ever, were the best ever gather ed together since its inception. Fred Zell, alias "Sharkey," erstwhile city drayman, U. S. mail carrier and dance promoter, has completed this week a water tank holding G500 gallons, 24 feet high. He proposes to furnish water to farmers on the Agency Plains and other districts who have to come here for their water supply He has also ordered a dynamo, capable of generating 1000 volts of electricity and a 15-horse gasoline engine from Montgomery, Ward & Co., of Chicago, and when it arriyes will install a complete electric light system for his private use. He also states his intention of wiring the Sanford building, furnishing lights for the Hammer Hardware store and the dance hall. He expects his outfit here by the 25th of this month.
