A-nVKllTIBINO HATK3 Knteredna second clnss matter August 29, 190, at the rostofflco at Madras, Ore. under the Act of Congress of March 8,1879. THURSDAY OCT. 27, 1910 ABUSING THE INITIATIVE DAIRY WISDOM The disfavor with which these county division schemes are looked upon is shown at a meet ing recently held in Multinomah county, whose sentiment is aptly expressed by the following ex tract: "The fact that the voter in the Deschutes and in Tillamook coun ties has a vote of equal value to yours and mine on this question affecting only our two counties is another surprising thing. No wonder the Multinomah yoter is staggered with the cool proposal by the Clackamas annexationists, not to mention those of the Washington crowd who wants to .a f. sup over anotner nz square miles, and no wonder that the sentiment is everywhere grow ing for a negative vote on all these county division schemes uecause submitted on a wrong and unfair principle." Churning Temperature. Don't forget that the temperature of cream at churning should be 50 to 58 degrees Fahrenheit In summer and GO to 02 degrees In winter. The best churning results will be had at these respective temperatures. Get Rid of th Drones. Feed Is too high to allow unprofit able animals to consume It when pay ing cows can be obtained for the same amount of money. The Profitable Silo. The quickest plan by which you will be Induced to build a silo Is to notice the profits your neighbor derives from his. Crabapples Decrease Milk. Many pastures are full of crabap ples, and they are greatly relished by cows, although tuey assuredly de crease the milk flow. They become large enough for the cows to eat about the time the fall pasturage Is the shortest, and the combined effect of these two conditions Is llabje to dry the animals up entirely. MOORK, Ilcglster DIPTHERIA BREAKS OUT Diphtheria has again broken out in Madras, and at the present time there are five cases, thought to have been brought by strang ers traveling through, who be came exposed at some other point. The first case to be reported in the town was Daisy, the young est child of H. K. Nissen, and after knowing it to be diphthe ria, all possible aid was given the child, but the disease was too deeply seated to yield to treat ment and the child passed away Sunday morning. Since that time three more cases have de veloped, Mrs. Charles Dizney and son Clarence, Rose Nissen and Can. Nissen. All of the cases have been closely watched by Dr. Long who. has them in charge and he reports them to be yielding to treatment of the only known preventative, anti-toxine. Thursday morning Dan Karough, the Austrian against whom the Grand Jury brought in a true bill accusing him of the killing of another Austrian, Andrew Melrich, a foreman in one of the con struction camps on the Deschutes river, was brought to trial at Prineville. A number or witnesses were ex amined and the case turned over to the jury Friday morning; after being out two hours they returned a verdict of murder in the second degree. The evi dence showed that the defendant wore a pair of very peculiarly shaped shoes, that is, they left a track that could easily be distinguished from tracks made by any other person, and that these tracks led directly up to within a few feet of the brink of the cut in which the murdered man was working, and that hi3 actions after the shooting strongly indicated that he was trying to get away from the scenes of the crime.' While all the evidence was of a circumstantial character, it was deemed by the jury strong enough for con viction in the second degree, The defendent will receive his sen tence some time during the week, which will probably be for life.
