i nn i The Madras Pioneer Published every Thursday by r-TMK IHON'EKU PUBLISH INO CO.- . 8UtJ80nPTION RATfeB: One year ....$U0 lx months.... .86 Three months...... .' .50 AVKUTI81Nn ItATKB ON APPLICATION Entered ns second class matter August 2H, 1901, at the Postofflce nt Madras. Oro under the Act of Congress of March ft, 187W. THURSDAY AUG t2, 1909 TAKING A CHANCE Nearly 300.000 persons regis terei in iIih Coeur D'Alene Spokane and Flathead reserva tion land drawings. Of this number only one in oue lnu di ed has a chance to secure any land whatever, and probably not to exceed one in one thou sand will have an opportunity to secure a tract of any excep tional value. The alleged lnck ones who secure homesteads in the drawing will be required 10 pay for the land at an up praised valuation placed upon ,it by the government, in addi tion to complying with the re quirements ad to residence upon the land. Here in Central .Oregon good many thousands of those who participated in the draw ing could have agoodquaiter section of laud each lor the tak ing. There are still large tracts of unappropriated government land that can be homesteaded, in Crook, Lake, Klamath and Harney Counties, and with transportation assured, there is no more desirable land in the Northwest. But the govem ,meut is not disposing of it by lottery, and possibly there, is the hitch. The lact that 300,000 people entered a diawing for less than 3000 homesteads in the recent. land openings in Washington .and Idaho does't indicate any! especial ..value in the land, but it emphasiKes the fondness of the average American for a game of chance. There were a dozeu first piitfes in" the land drawings, and ever man who registered expected to win one of these. THE DESCHUTES FIGHT r Daily developments in the warfare in the Deschutes can ,yon have dispelled all doubt as - to the intentions of Porter Bros. There does not appear to be ,anjT reasonable doubt but that , they are going to build the Oregon Trunk Line i.uto Central Oregon, Tjje gublic is in the dark as to the financial i'nter , ests which are back Of Lb is iqad, tb.ut that they are sufficient .large to insure the completion . of the project and. thereby enter tb.erich Central Oregon. Hans . porjatiOn field in direct com pe r titiotivji (he ilarririia.n inter-1 ( estsj is .amply proven by the , sudden atid frenzied efforts of j those interests to build the long-promised Central Oregon railroad Up the Deschutes can " yon. Mr. Harriinan possesses espe ' cial facilities for ' finding out these things, and that he knows who is behind the Oregon Trunk Line is probably tb(j (best guarantee tup "people of Central Oregon haye that there .will be two roads Up the Des chutes canyon within the next eighteen months. ' The Des . chutes route ia admittedly the best that could be secured into . the Central Oregon country, al , though the most expensive of construction. Mr.Itarriman wj.Il , hot permit any riva,l interests , to otptypy ,U .if he 'can preVent . it, and in.. Any, event not to the , exclusion of Jiia 6va road, for' ,the Deschutes canyon rQad will Unquestionably have a tienien , dou8 competitive advantage in Lthe trauspoitation field. Event nally Mr. Harriman Would have built the Deschutes Hue any way, but it is not bo certain that he would have bUllt it now if the. Oregon Trunk Lino had not forced him into it Both mads t an be built in the Deschutes Canyon, and the pres-' ent battle is for the control of certain straiegib points whereby the m re udvantnueous ronie (san be. obtained, if the. Qarri man interests should win at contested points, it is not likely that this will prevent their rivals from building -U will force them to cross the river. If the Orei;on Trunk should win, the Harriinan line will have to take the less ad van la ireous route. But there is noth mg 111 the Deschutes canyon fight lo indicate that either side will quit. What is said lo lave been the highest piice ever paid for hogs in a'iy matket in th United States was realized in Porl land last week when $9.50 per hundred, live weight, was paid lor a bunch of Hue pork ers. Many other sales at $9 per hundredweight were made in the Portland stockyards. These attractive urices will stimulate the hog industry ihroughou the state. In this immediate locality, however, there wi probably be very few porkers shipped to Portland markets With two railroads building into this section, empioyin several thousand Jaborers in the various camps, there promises soon to oe a local mai Kei ior ai 1 products of that kind, at better prices than can be realized by selling for shipment to Port- and. The Oregon hoo; seems to oe in Lis old ousmeas ni mortgage-lifting. Both of the rival railroads' 1 1 building in the Deschutes can yon announce that they will oomnlete the construction of their respective lines as far as Madias within 18 months. It is to be hoped that the announce meat is not premature, lor it sounds very encouraging to the farmer in this long-isolated sec- tiont who lias been hauling the product of his ranch 45 miles to the nearest railroad point. If the estimate of time required to complete the construction of the roads is anywheie near correct. this reason's crop of wheat will e the last hauled to the rail- oad at Shaniko from tire Mad ras country. . Woik on the new school building in the Madras district is making good progress, and unless tome unforeseen acci dent occurs 'o delay, it, the milding will be ready to occu py bv the time school opens on September is. The framework or the superstructure is up. ind the building is taking form. promises to be a very at- tractive structure in appearance and one of which the district may well feel proud.
