THURSDAY - DEC. 24, 1908 RAILROAD DEVELOPMENT The Oregon Electric, a new' railway line which has been luiilt through the heart of the Willamette valley, has occa sioned a development of that country which is described as truly wonderful. A similar in dustrial impetus would be given this section on the advent of a railroad, only, this country be ing without rail transportation at all, the rapidity of develop ment would be almost beyond comprehension. Commenting on the service given hy the Or egon .Electric, the Oregonian reasons thusly: 'Oregon has suffered too long from that policy which has re sulted in no roads being built because there were no settler;? where roads were wanted, the ob vious reason for the absence of settlers being failure of the rail roads to supply tranportation facilities. It was simply a case of the railroads mistaking the effect for the cause, and it re mained for the Oregon Electric to expose the fallacy of such leasoiiiiig. The people living along the line of the Oregon Electric, prior to its construc tion, despite the altendant difii cullies, suceeded in reaching a market ' with their products and in getting supplies back to their homes. But poor transput ; talion and high charges re moved all incentive that might nave attracted new settlers 'They huddled in close to the ' cijifH, or settjed in Washingtoi. where suburban 'lines have made life more attractive foi the people who do not caiv to live in the uity. Willi the com ing of the Oregon Electric ap peared a host of new settles who scattered out fiom the cit ies and began developing thi ricli lands along the road. - The development is, of course, in its infancy, but it is increas ing more rapidly than ever be fore, and each additional mil 'ot new electric line or steam railroad means" more people and more tramc as soon as it is in operation. The figures given in the Oregon Electric report, of course, do not take into accounl the interest on the investment, luid it will necessariljr bo a year or two before the road can make a very good showing for tire men who have put their money into it. At the. same time it has demonstrated thai it is possible to build up a traf fic where none existed before, if the proper transportation facili ties are provided. Similar re sults follow the construction of hll railroads in a hew, rich country like Oregon. For 3'ears Astoria was denied railroad connection because "the route could not supply business for a railroad," and yel, as soon ns the road was biiilt; new towns sprang into existence and hew indtistHea were started, 'and today the traffic which pours off that '00-mile stretch of load between Goble and Asto ria is simple) phenomenal. That it is all new traffic is shown by llle fact that the steamboats are 'doing practically the salne amount of business that they were handling before the rail road was built. The Oregon Electric iS a bright and shining exaniple of what an indepEii dent, well-hianageci transporta entitled to hearty support and liberal treatment from the peo nle. and the same treatment should be given tb all transport tation lines that ban be induced to come into the field and aid in the development and up build iucof Orecon . and the" Pacific Northwest." . f WILL GET THE RAILROAD Oregonian Ranchers at Madras, on the Agency Plnins, fifty miles from the terminus of the Columbia Souihern lluilroad, are sinking a deep well with the eXpet ta lion ot striking oil at no great depth. Whenever they discov er oil the' will shortly there after discover the railroad for which they long have sought. But they will ge.t the railroad in time, whether they find oil or int. This is' an excellent point for some enterprising man to start a brick 3'ard. With more or less building here all the time There is always a demand for this material. At present build ers are compelled to send to Prineville and Shaniko after hrick, 35 and 40 miles distant respectively, or rusort to a stove pipe through the roof, which at all limes is a dangerous propo sition There is a prospect ot eonsideinblw building in Mad ras and vicinity the coming . r year, anu me manuiaciure 01 brick at this place shoulu prove a profiiable investment.
