Oro. umlor tho Act of Congress of Mnr6h'3.187!, THURSDAY OCT. 8, 190S "THE MAN OF MYSTERY." iur. run iiumn uus neen uuiieo "the man of mystery." He tic quired the title in Wall street , beoause of the secrecy, wliiol attends all his operations, nhd confidantes. And, ont here ii Oregon he lives up to the name for the mystery which sur rounds his business movement. is as impenetrable as it ever was "on the street." More than two moi.ths ago Mr. Huriitniui announced that he was going to build a railroad into Central f A. 1 . .1. A 1 civ vuvo) uut luui1 till" route for the proposed road was not j'et selected. It was be lieved that Mr. Harrimau meant what he said, and it is still gen ,erally believed that he is hurry ing preparations to build the line at once, but on the eve of the beginning of construction there is as deep a mystery re garding the route selected as there was the day Mr. Harri- Ujan made his announcement It has been recently reported, apparently upon good grounds, that the Corvallis & Eastern was the route telected for ex tension, nod that contractors and construction officials had been going over the route from Detroit East into Central Ore gou. But, if that line is to he extended, why this concentra tion of the energies of their en gineering department in the Deschutes canj'on ? To obstruct the Oregon Trunk Line, would be the first answer suggested to that question, but if that were the purpose, why have tin. Harriman people sought a dif ferent route out of the Des chutes canyon into this coun trjT; why has there been no ef fort on their part to acquire right-of-way, at least at strat egic points, while the Oregon Trunk Line people proceeded to secure right-of-way all the Pfiv tiirnnrrh. unmolested? - c, 1 The question uppermost in the minds of the people of this section who have been observ ing the recent developments in Ihe railroad game, is, "What is the card the 'Man of Mystery' has up his, sleeve?" No one could be unsophisticated enough to suppose lor a moment that the Harrimau interests will per initthe Oregon Trunk Line, or nnv other rival interests, to j build up the Deschutes canyon into Central Oregon, until all the means of obstruction, in which Harriman is a past mas ter, had been exhausted. And yet, there has been no apparen move in that direction. This apparent acquiescence by the Harriman interests, in the invasion of their tenitoiy by the Oregon Trunk Line, said to have Hill backing, has a inichty suspicious look to it, ,1111 th developments of the next few weeks will be awaited with interest. their premises, and giving fair warning that unless the veeds were destroyed the county an tlioruies would do tho work and tile u lien against the prop ert 10 cover t ie cost. Tin 1 . warning vvns in most cases heeded, but it is reported Ilia in a lew instances the autliori ties have had to curry out their hrent. Ojie instance is report ed in which the place was so badly overgrown with noxious weeds that Ihe county has . bii of NHvernl hundred dollars for clearing them off. The prop ert owner, in this instance, is said to be a non-resident, and it may be that he had no knbwl H'lge o. the condition of his land, in which event the en forcementof th law in his cns- would appear unjust. But sue is not the ease, Ihe law is a good one, made to protect the community from the spread ol noxious weeds, and it would be more unjust were the resident owners required to remove the weeds, while on neighboring lands tliey were permitted to nourish and scatter new seeds to the four winds each year. The effectiveness of the law de pends entirely upon the thot ughuess with which it is en urced. CEDAR SHINGLES, ihe best grade Leave your order with me. I have a car now on baud. A.
