HarrimatJ muffineers have been surveying lines into Central Or egon from all points of the com pass for the past half dozen 3'ears, some times from two or . v . ... t inree directions at tue same time, and it might have been supposed that when Mr. Harri lnan got ready to build his long-promised road into Central Oregon he would have at his command the necessary engi neering data upon wliiou to base a choice of routes. What, then, is the cause of the delay in selecting the route into this Jong-neglected seciiou ? Wh v are surveying parties working over all the, old lines which Harriman has had surveyed into Central Oregon? It has been six weeks since Governor Chamberlain, P. S. Stanley and General Manager O'Brien held the conference with the railroad magnate at Pelicay Bay, at which time the immediate con struction of a railroad into Cen tral Oregon was promised, al though no route was named. It is fully a month since promi nent officials of the Harriman lines held a conference at Teli can Bay, at which time it was supposed a decision as to the route to be followed would be made. And still there is no in dication that any route has been decided upon, or that uc tual construction work is about to begin. There is plenty of "activity" along the Harriman fcuiveys, but it runs principally to corduroy breeches and -high top boots, and it is a toss up whether it means construction, or obstruction, since other inter ests are trying to, build into this section. ut't acted to the meeting. Part Ues desiring premium, li$ts and racing programs onii secure thetu by calling at The Pioneer office. ' General Manager O'Brieni Chief Engineer Bosohke and other Hnrrimnn oflioiais Were reported to be scouting through Crook county 'and Central Ore gon Inst week, looking over the route of the proposed Harriman line. More likely it.ws their 27th Annual Bluff nt Central Oregon, upon the 20 preceding ones of which many hopes of a railroad have been built in past yeais. There Was not as much interest displayed 'this year as on similar occasions in former years, and iho cause might be traceable to the , activity ol other railroad interests aloncr the Deschutes canyon the only natural pass into the country. Up until quite recently Mr, Bar- rimau was the only hope, but it begins to look now as though we might possibly get a road without him and in spite of him. L0U0KS feliOS. Luke county stage company, operating a line between Pais ley, Summer Lake and Silver Lake has given notice that it will not handle alcoholic liquors over its line. The precincts in which the stage line operates having voted dry iu the recent ection, the stage Company takes the position that it wilt not be a party to the violation of the law, by hauling the liquor in. This position is cer tainlj' a. unique one for a stage line or any transportation com panj' to take, although the prin ciple is undoubtedly correct.. HALF A CROP THIS YEAR Very little grain from this section has been hauled to Shaniko so far this season. Al though the price is better than last Fall, 74 cents being the lat est quotation from Shaniko, there is a disposition to hold for a little better price. How ever, some wheat will begin toi Inove out to the railroad, now that threshing is about over with, There is probably not to ex ceed half the amount of. grain in the country this year 'that there was last Fall at this timf. only about half a crop having been harvested this j'ear, owing to the very unfavorable Spring. These unfavorable conditions were general throughout the wheat districts of the state, and In some sections the results were even more disastrous than in this district. Reports from the various threshers operating in this district show that the average yield this year was about half that of last year, al though in some exceptional bases a full crop was reported. OUR COUNTY FAIR1 The Central Oregon Livestock Uud Agricultural Association Will hold its fourth annual fair niid race meeting at Priuevllle, October id to 17 inclusive, and it is anticipated that the fair will be tho best ever held by the hSsoblntioii. The wee po feraiii also promises to be a good tine, Uud Mill $2000 to bo .dls ' tribdted iil pUrsefl, iUiitniber of gdod Holies will doubtless be Senator Rand ot Vancouver, Washington, who is now in this locality securing, right-of way or the Oregon Trunk Line, was the unly man in the Washing tqn legislature two years ago who voted against their direct primary law as presented to the egislature at that lime. He was bitterlj' condemhed for do- ng so at the time, but the change of sentiment over there, incident to the scramble and muddle in their first general primary under the new law, makes Senator Rand's record on the 'question one to which he can point with pride.
