THURSDAY June 13, 1907 WOOL SALES AT SHANIKO The first annnnl wool sales Of tins XnaHOM Jit .Iwuiiko weiv Jield thnie on TuhmIiiv ami Wednesday of this week, tw.. million pounds of wool cli:m; ing hands at prions musing ..h 'tween 18 and 21 and 1 S cuts. A number of buyers, represent ing Eastern inanufaotuivrs and dealers were in attendance. Th Baldwin Sheep & Laud Cni pany of Hayereek dispo-ed nt their large clip ot nearlv lf)0,000 pounds at 20 and 8 4 c-nts. Ewen Mclennan of Sliaiki. whose clip of 100.000 pounds "brought the top puce at th sales, received 21 and 1 8 c tits, his wools being in exception all' good condition. Prices were slightly lowei than last season due to the drouth of last season and the .severity of the past Winter, ih wools not being up to their usual high standard. Shaniko is the largest, wool market, fi the raw product, in the United States, and owitig to the qualm and staple of the wool, ha commanded the highest prices. The prospect is that our irri gating neighbors on the south will have to look to their laurel in -the matter of quantit' and quality of crops inised thi. year. The "dry 'country" of the Agency Plains and Hay stack district promises big things this season. A soaking rain fell over this distrirt last Monday night, do ing a vast amount of good to growing crops, not that orop. were sufi-ring for want of moi. ture at this time, but it will help to make good crops better. So far, conditions have been an that could be desired. Crop are looking line and each shower of tain lessens the dan ger of injury from a possible period between now and harvest time when parching wind- may prevail. With wheat prices already high, the promise of great activity in constitution work on the big irrigation pro jects in the desert region jusi south of us which will make a ready cash market for all kinds of produce, and with almost a Certainty of an immen-e crop, the prospect for a prosperous season for the fanners of this district is very bright. Strange how the aspect of land changes with changing conditions. The East Otvgon ,ian can remember when the Sand Ridge, the beet wheat land in Grand Honde valley, was looked upon as worthless grass land, not worth the homestead filing fee. It can also remem ber, more recently, when much of the finest wheat land in the nyrljwest part of Umatilla couttty .was counted "cultus" and farmers looked upon the teuderfeHt who first located upon tt in pity ami compassion. Now flip, Sand Ridge land is worth 100 pvr acre for wheat, sugar beet pr. orchards and the land northwest pf Pendleton is not for sale at .any reasonable price. Will : noj. the same be true of Harney, Malheur, Gilliam, Morrow .and other counties havng Ajast areas of Waste land? Bast Oregonian. The matter of establishing a distrint high s'oliool in U tdras wll be submitted to the school Voters at the annual meeting next Monday. The proposal for a high school should cam unanimously. A negative vole puts a premium on igMOrnnW and will wink against supply ing the ri-lng generation with facili ies for equipping them selves for ootnp tilioii with those who have had better .id vantages. To deny any pine ieal and possible betterment ol our school system is eWnini of the 'pently-wi-e, pound foolish" order. The Cost i- no1 the vital point to consider. An improvement along this lin will be worth all it costs, au from the fact alone that the movement for a district high school, or ji department teach ing the higher branches, is an earnest effort to improve our local educational taciiities. ought to he Sufficient to win the support of eveiy chool votei and restdeiir in the district.
