Hiiriilim nnd Undivided $100,000.00 THAT W e a r The wiiter problem on Agency Plains was solved last Wed nesday at'tei noon twlien a gotd supply of pure, cold wafer war orkqon Htruek at a depih of 40Q feet in r 1 to well wliioli was being sunk on iiiu vv. i. iviagtii raiicii. The drill had reached a depth of 400 feet and wxva sinking ill a )ft clay formation when water was first encountered, and when abandoned for the evening i't parties Kvaierwaa gradually rising in OREGON " p,00lt at a depth ol aO leet II tne wen wiien ariiiini; was resumed. It was decided, how ever, in spile of tins line sh.oiviug, to sink through the soft fotuiation, and twenty feet was drilled during Ihe day, by which time the water had risen to a hyighth ofifty feet in the well. The water is clear, com and palatable, and the supplyi h believed to be practically inexhaustible. The news of the lucky strike on iiiu riaius was soon noised about, and was the sole topic of conversation on the streets during the day. Agency Plain lies nearly J 100 leet above tho Deschutes River, and. it has been contended by many, with every appearance of good roa sou for the contention, that water could not be had instil the level of the river was reached. The line flow en countered at a depth of 400 f et explodes this theory, and promises a comparatively easy solution of a problem that has heretofore appeared toodillicult for tho small rancher to under take to solve. 'In the immediate neighbor hoodo the well, the striking a big How of water caused as much excitement as would have been produced by an 4,oi gusher," and a number wen over to coiiflnn the good news as soon as it became noised aoout. i was. promised by the drillers that if the supply in created the whistle would b sounded, and next morning when the drilling was resumed the whistle was kept going continually. t answered th double purpose of giving veil 10 ther own feelufs, and noti f)ingtbe neighborhood of, th- successlul termination of their labors. I hewell is a community well having been drilled by a aura ber of ranchers residing in th ueighboihood of the lagil ranch. Those interested in tin enterprise are A. P. Clark Petei JCilburg, J. Strain, .Roscot- Gaid, a W. Conard, W. F Magili, H. id. 41ackerby, and 6am Edttioudson. A pump and a Miiall engine will be put in ai once, to supply tnose who aiv inierested in the well, aftei which doubtless there will b sufficient water to supply tilers. Several other ranciierr have already announced their intention of putting down wellr at once. 1 he point where th Maglll well is drilled lias no advantages of location ovei otner rauciies on tne riains. as far as the surface indications- can be read, and others dril ing are as apt to strilce water at the same depth, or less, as they are to nave to go lartner. mere is the same cnance that there wa efore, but with something lelinite to go on as to the depth necessarj', there will be moiv leart for ihe enterprise. , OPEN FINE TIMBER LAND Fremont Reserve May Bo Opened To Entry Soon Timber seekers have their eyes on the 1 remont Keserve the southern part of this county, which contains some of he liner t timber lauds in the tate, and which will be- thrown opeu to entry within a -short time, t he -Fremont reserve contains more than 850,000 acres, much of it line yellow pine timber land. It will be thrown open for entry in the same manner now being adopted in opening up for eiytry a small tract on the Matoies River. Madras, Oregon eveiy ranch ill that community may be expected to have its upply of good water for all 'domestic purposes. Tho efleot upon property values in that locality cannot bo estimated. Lack ol water for household purposes was the greatest handicap from which ihedistrioi, suffered, and pros pective purchasers of land on he Plains "balked" when it was discovered that they would have to haul water for distances of from live to ten miles. Here tofore tho ranchers on the Plains have hauled watei- from the land, and which gives the settler a prefeiencH right wl.t-n the land is open for otitry. It is believed that as sunn as th order is issued permitting set Moment on the Fremont lie serve there will be a stampede of timner seekers to secure the lino claims whioh tho reserve contains. Thirustampede will be augmented by th fact thavt that timber lauds are increasing in value and are now bringing about $1 50 per thousand stumpagH. The Fremont Re servo lies in the southern por tion of this bounty, begin niiijr nbout eight miles south of Bent, The opening up of the Fre mont Reserve for entry is Considerable interest wa manifested at' the annual school, meeting held in this district last; Monday, several questions oi importance tp, ijie. district being voted'upoo. W addition to, tha election of a school d.irectQ?ancl cler,k. John cTaggar wa elected director for the eJi,aiu'ng term, to succeed John A.yes and S. I- Gray was re elected, clerk of the district. The question of establishing a high school at this place. under the provisions of the law recently enacted, was submitted 10 the voters and carried almost unanimously, only one vote, being recorded against it. On this subject two questions were submitted, one for the estab lishinent of a union high school and the other tor the establish; ment of a district high school, should the uuion high school- project Jail through. jSotb. questions carried with little op-." position to them, and the attitude of the voters of the district was quite clear on the question of improving the school facilities of the district. Another question which was submitted to the voters of the district was that of permitting the several church organization of this place to use the build ing as a place of worship. For some tune this Question lum been a mooted one, many ob jecting to-theuae of- the build- ingfor other than school pur- puses, and others claiming the. privilege for the churches until hey had church buildings in. ' kwhich to worship. The .nuns,- ion was submitted to the voters of 1 he district for the purpose of ascertaining their wiahes on the 1 uhject, and the decision was n favor ol closing th building - except lor schuol purposes.. 1 lie vote, however, was verv - close, 13 v-ofing for a closed building and 12 voting for the chuwhes. The vote was a tie up to the Inst vole, and it re quiied ihatvVe to decide. This itciMtm is, of coucsu, not final, as the school directors have the right to grant or refuse permis sion for the churches to use the buildinti. but it is likely that tho vviahes of the voters in the district will ho regarded by 1 hem, as it was for this purpose that the vote was taken. e.vpeoted to be announced within a few works. Large ttacts which were temporarily withdrawn ft out entrv tor. t'oivsiry purposes in Oregon, Washington and Idaho, and which have not heretofore been oteaied into National reserves, wiU he h own open at the same 'itne. The respiration of these iiacis to tnU' hits het'ii recom mended iy t ie forestry serviro for the reason that reserves can not now be created expept by' act of Congress, and such legislation would be dUicult td obtain at this time, for wliioli reason tracts temporarily with drawd will be rostored, 'v:
