Daniel Bmith of robbing W I United States
mail in Southern Oregon, and committed to
the Multnomah County Jail to await her trial,
was bailed out by her father, Mr. James Martin,
who is, we learn, wealthy farmer in Marlon
county.
J. N. Matfaeny, Esq.. Lee and the rest of his
family lour for Hnokana Falls on Monday

The Bt. Charle Hotel at Albany has recently
undergone considerable change. The build
ing has been ried one story and new ell
built, which gives about forty additional rooms.
The honse ia well furnished and sets an excel
lent table. The Hotel is credit to Uie fast
growing city of Albany, and Messrs. Mathews
Morrison know how to eater for the trsveling
public. When you goto Albany that is the
place to stop.
Aa old celestial, says the Oregonian, while
passing store on Wednesday evening, took off
pair of pants which were hanging in front,
supposing his actions wore unobserved. But
the larceny was discovered an instant after it
was committed aud pursuit given. A lively
chase followed, in which oftloer McCoy nd sev
eral others Joined. After dodging for some
time about the corners, the thief was overhauled
' and taken to Jail. The grand jury have the
ea under advisement, and John may yet have
the opportunity of doing the Btate service in
manufacturing brick.
A rimual Surprise.
A gentleman writing from Dallas yesterday
MVS : "After Harmon Lodge No. 161, I. O. u.
T., at this place, had concluded its labors on
Tuesday evening, the members were called to
order by Brother Bhepard. and presented Broth
er Charles 11. Kecd with a handsome pen and
' holder. Brother Charles A. Messmer made the
presentation speecn, after which bountiful
collation was spread, consisting of cake, fruit
and candies. Every one went away feeling as if
tbey had enjoyed themselves. Brother Reed
left on the 20th for Boise City."
On the afternoon of Friday, the 22d inst., at
hU father s residence in Balem, Qrvgon, E. D.
Williams. Iecessed was born in Polk connty
Oregon. Febiuarv 12th, and has resided
in the State ever since; was married March 19,
1ST4. Mr. Williams had a large circle of
friends and acquaintances who had known him
rrora childhood to the time of bis death, as a
moral and exemplary gentleman, and now deep
ly feel their loss in ibis Uie sudden departure of
an esteemed friend.
River Sows.
TheO. 8. B. Co.'s steamer Bonanza arrived
at her wharf on Friday evening at 5 o'clock,
with a small lot of freight. She started down
the river, after unloading, and takes one hun
dred and fifty tons of wheat at Lincoln and
Wheatland.
The Ohio arrived at her dock at 7 o'clock, and
proceeded to EoU this morning where she will
load with wheat.
The Champion arrived immediately after the
Ohio with about forty tons of merchandise.
She loaded at tne Balem Mills with flour and
proceeded to Portland.

The participants in the exercises Friday after
noon at the University, all did well, and
marked improvement is noticed in the exercises
generally.
The instrumental music was good rendered
by Misses Sriber and Miller.
"Infernal Conference," a declamation by
Richmond Kfcllv was well rendered. This
speaker has an excellent voice ahd possesses
knowledge of properly uing it. Among oiber
exercises worthy of mention was a declamation
by Waller Graves; a composition on "Penman
snip," by B. D. Allen, and especially a recita
tion by Sarah Genner, io which excellency wai.
shown both in stleciion and manner, a "Lati;
Selection," declaimed by Thomas Jory was well
rendered, and a composition on "Fault Find
ing," by Olive Chamberlain was far above
the average; "Hope," a declamation by Edward
Clark; a political declamation by Charles Johns
was well spoken. M iLtie Jory did well in the
recitation "Dying Chrixtain," and Sarelia Grif
fith verv creditably recited a humorous selec
tion, which pleased the andience immensely
"Autumn Winds," a song bv the school closed
the exercises for the afternoon. Regular exer

Baptist Chinese Mission Sandnjr HehMl
We clip the following report of the above
named school, from a Portland exchange :
This school, under the superintendence of
W. Traver, during the past eleven months has
made its mark upon tho pupils and many of
them are becomiag familiar with the New Test
ament. Ten of the members were last April
received into the Baptist church and one into
the Episcopal church.
During the entire year the attendance has
ranged from twenty to forty, but since the fish
eries have closed its numbers have increased
one-half. On October 10th there were fifty-five
Chinese present, and on October 17th sixty were
eckoned in the various classes. A steady in
crease of interest ia noticeable among all the
members, and last night two of the scholars
nresented themselves for admission into the

Baptist church and will be baptized on Bun
day evening next.
Beligious services have been held in Chinese
on Thursday and Sunday evenings, and Sunday
at2p.M., on the street. .
It is estimated that over 400 Chinese listened
attentively last Sunday to the out-door discourse
of the able missionary Dong Gong. The im
pression made upon the minds of the scholars
by daily and weekly contact with the religious
influence of Christian teachers is wonderful
They are eager to learn, anxious to understand

Since the magniflcent failure of the Demo
cratic rally at the Opor House last night, in
which carpet-bagger Lnttrall was the principal
showman and Governor Watkinds ring master,
there are numerous opportunities to get bets
that Marion county will give Mr, Warren five
hundred majority.

Hon. Bufus Mallory returned home last
night. We regret that he was unable to accept
pressing invitivtion to make speech t the

We regret to learn that Capt. Sladen, of den.
Howard's .ton", who was thrown from a horse
recently at Walla Walla and had his leg broken,
is not progressing towards convalescence as rap
idly as was hoped. The wounded limb it in
such state ss to lead the attendant surgeon to
believe that amputation will be necessary to
save the Captain s life. We trust, however, that
the operation may be avoided.

The good people of Portland are offered
treat to-night in the way of speech by the late
importation from California. If he suffers
much from grasshoppers Dr. Bushwiler should
administer little corrosive tublimate or other
mild remedy to enable him to get back to Cali
fornia, after the terrible rebuke the people of
Oregon will give him on eloctiou day. Dr.
0 rover and Dr. Miller failed to relieve him
while bete, and He suffered terribly.

On Thursday morning last, young wan
named Frank Lord was engaged in removing
the scaffolding which bad been used Ut the
erection of Uie extension of the Astoria Far
mers' Company's warehouse. Attempting to
descend from the roof, be stepped upon a
board, which gave way, causing him to slide
six feet down the roof, and thence precipitating
him to the wharf below, distance of sixteen
feet more. Btnnned by Uie fall, on returning
to consciousness, Frank discovered that bad be
moved two inches from where he fell, he would
have rolled over into the river. Had he done
so he must Inevitably have been drowned, as no
one witnessed the fall. Mr. Lord ia considera
bly bruised on one side, from his face down to
bis feet, but providentially be bad no bones
broken, and apparently has received no very
severe internal injuries.
Hrrt nurse's Slew Novel.
The New York Tribune says Bret Harte's
new novel, "Gabriel Convoy," which U at last
completed, and carefully gnarded in the pub
lishers' safe, calls forth the highest anticipa
tions in literary circles. It will be begun as a
serial in the November number of Btribuer
f 'atraEine. without illustrations, for it is said to
be graphio beyond need of them, and full of in
cident. The story takes its title, "Gabriel Cou-
rov," from its hero, ft simple, good-hearted
honest old miner, of a type somewhat different
from that of his illustrious predecessors in Mr.
Harte's writings. Several familiar friends.
nevertheless, renew old acquaintance, among
them Colonel Btarbotlle. The story is wholly
in Mr. Harte's original leld, and is said to ful
ail, as novel, the premise of his very best
tales. The opening is pronounced, by crilics
who have had access to the manuscript, to be
very powerful; it is terrible picture of starv
ing camp, and from this start the story is said
to hold the reader with an almost uncomforta
ble grip, seeing that he has to wait montb by
month.
M-e robbery.
The Oregon tan says telegraphic information
reached the city yesterday of the robbery of a
stage, together with the tressore box of Wells
Fargo A Co.'s express. While the Northwestern
Staije Co.'s stage was coming down aud within
about six miles of Umatilla, on Thursday night
the driver w ordered to stop by several rtv
who stepped to the roadside and presented pis-
tola and guns. Two passengers were in the
stage at the time, one of whom was Major
H. Bovle, who is en route for rortlaud from
Malhuer Heservetion. Cocked pistols were lev
eled at the h(da of Major Boyle and the other
passenger, and tbey were Invited to "throw n
their hands," and come down with their loose
change, which they did without unnecessary
delav. The robbers then took the treasure box
which thev broke open. The "pocket" contain
ing the money, papers and letters, was also
taken awav. A large amount ot money is said
io have been in the treasure-box. but it is im
possible at present for the express company
estimate Uie total sum taken. Men are on trac
of the robber, and in close pursuit. We hope
to be able to chronicle the capture of the high-
wavtuen in the next issue.

The Oregonian contains the following accnnj
of this new steamer: "Notwithstanding the
inclement weather, quite crowd gathered upon
the Pacido dock yesterday afternoon to wish
this new steamer good speed, as with Captains
Scott and Miller at the wheel, she started upon
her trial trip. After going up to the foot of
Ross' Island her bow was turned down stream,
and Portland being passed in handseme style,
she continued her trip down the river te the
foot of Swan Island. There she was turned
about, but had hardly got tinder full headway
when hail was received from the O. S. N.
Cj.'s boat Oneonta, and from her Mr. Gates,
Chief Engineer of the O. S. N. Co., was taken
aboard, the first passenger bound for Portland
on the Willamette. The trip up from Swan
Island against a down-stream wind, was made
in good season, the speed of the now boat being
about 12 miles per hour. This will be im
proved, however, as the engines wear smooth
aud a full head of steam is used. The City of
Salem, although a light draught boat, is very
staunchly constructed in every part. She is
driven by two higb.-presnre engines, 14-inch
bore by i foot stroke, manufactured expressly
for her at Portsmouth, Ohio. These are sup
plied with steam by a boiler manufactured at
the same place, donble riveted throughout and
of immense strength. One hundred and forty
pounds to the sqare inch is its working pres
sure, but upon the trial no more than 125
ponnds were employed. She is provided with
two saloons and from 15 to 20 staterooms.
These the owners propose to furnish in a style
hitherto unknown upon the Upper Willamette,
and no pains or expense have been spared upon
their part to make her model steamboat of her
class. Her draught is but eight inches forward
and 12 aft, light, and it is estimated that she
will be able to carry 220 tons upon three feet of
water. Tuesday of next week is the time at
present set for her appearance upon the regular
line between this city and Salem. If there be
but sufficient water to cover the pebbles, pas
senger seed fear no detention on account ot
gravel bars. Captain Boott has been heard to
declare in jocose way that the City of Balem
will be able to navigate dry land, providicg

The steam tug Gen. Caubr, lying at Flavel'a
wharf, Astutia, took fire In the boiler, room, at
an early hour on Thursday morning last, and
arnmly escaped destruotlon. A general alarm
was sounded and Uie Astoria t ire veparimem
tarned out, but they could not make their uia-
ehiue work, but fortunately the fire was extin
guished without their aid and the damage to the
boat was very slight.

The jury in the case of 8, J. L. Whitetnan,
after being out over six hours, t 16:30 o'clock
Friday night brought in a verdict of guilty, and
recommended him to the mercy of the court.
The penalty for offenses such as the one charged
in this caw is imprisonment in the penitentiary
from one to twenty years, at the discretion of
the court. Counsel for defense have made
motion for new trial, but as the court has ail
journed until Nov. Htli, the motion cannot be
argued until after that date.
Willam Price, one of a gang of horse thieves
who have been operating in Washington coun
ty, was arrested near Phillip Foster's place a
day or two since by Sheriff Bchnltt and placed
In the hands of the Chief of Police of Portland
until this morning, when he started with him
for the Dalles where be is to stand his trial
Several charges hav been laid at the defend
ant's door, but it is thought that t least two
can be proved home to him, ss oue of bis pal's

A Portland exchange says : "The four boys
confined in the County Jail, awaiting their trial
for grand larceny, seem so well pleased with
their surroundings that tbey at times wax mer-
rv. and become a source of vexation to tke less
hilarious. Last week, while the prisoners ere
taking an airing in the corriders, these young
calltwag begin to romp and scream with
very delight at receiving so much liberty, and
the other prisoners found it necessary to !k

name was Chas. Ban born, and at once instiga

occasion which brought the members of this
Company together, and to report their feelings
touching the early demise of our brother, Em
met D. Williams, ofifer tlie following remarks
and resolutions :
The sure and silent messenger of death has
again entered our ranks and taken from us one
of our companions in his earlv manhood, and
at time when ell of his hopes and aspirations
were directed toward a long life of use' illness to
his fellow man. Our brother. Emmet D. Will
iams, was born in this State February 12, 1S55,
and although quite young at the time of his
death, he bad established a character for integ
rity and faithfulness, and in every walk of life he
had the esteem and affection of bis associates.
In deep sorrow for this loss to his family,
relatives and friends, and for his example as an
exemplary man and devoted citizen fireman,
we ofier this mark ef respect to the cherished
memory of our deceased brother. In this trial
we recognize the immediate presence of the
power of Him who is lather and a consolation
to the afflicted, and who does all things well,
and we humbly acknowledge our submission to
His will, and onr entire dependence upon His
omnipotent love for our strength and support.
Resolved, That we offer to the bereaved wid
ow, relatives and friends of our deceased broth
er for the loss sustained in his death our sym
pathy and the assurance that we mingle our sor
row with their grief.
Resolved, That these rooms be draped in
mourning; that we attend the funeral of onr
brother in body, and that we wear the usual
badge of sorrow for thirty days.
Resolved, That a copy of these proceedings be
presented to the widow and parents of the de
