AUGUST 7, 1.HT2 Farming must be a good business for the reason that so many poor far mers continue to hold possession of their farms. There are farmers who are not worthy of the name, who are shiftless, behind hand with their work, allowing buildings to rnn down and to be left nnpainted, allow ing machinery to stand out doors the year round without protection, who in spite of all this bad management continue to make a living and retain possession of their land. More unsolicited mail order sub scriptions are pouring into this onice than ever before in its history. Wed nesday morning's mail brought as the following names: F. C. Campbell, Brown's Valley, Mian.; F. L Will iams, Wolsey, S. D.; X. 1 Gerrais, Pokegama. Ore, and W. Brommet. Waitsbnrg, Wash. Many new coun ty subscribers are also being added to onr list weekly. After a long list of dastardly deeds convict and outlaw Tracy did a good one at last Surrounded this time, with no hope of escape, he gave np hie long fight for liberty and killed himself. Nervy and defiant to the last, he would not allow his pursuers the glory and satisfaction of killing him. May we hear little more of Tracy. Recently a man from the conntry was hunting harvest hands, and ap proached a couple of hobos without a cent in their pockets. Would they work! Well nit. This suggest that that every hobo who asks for a hand out these days should be kicked over the back yard fence. s The Plaixpealeb is not as popular with the politicians as it might bp, perhaps. It is too independent. It stands for justice, fair play and true republicanism. This fact is recogn ized and appreciated by ths common people, however. The miles on a good road are short. A good road most be a dry one. Water is the chief enemy vt good roads when making them plan for good drainage. Roseburg is in charge of the pret ty Douglas county school-mams just now, this being institute week. We almost regret that we are not a Doug las county school boy. While England is to all intents and purposes & republic, on its social side it is most aristocratic and clings fervently t j every feature of court tradition. We know you are pleased with the new farm septrator, that yon have bought. It saves a lot of hauling, and then the warm milk for the calves will soon make beef. The local campaign for 1904 goes merrily on. There will be some badly winded politicians ere the next election day rolls around. With Panama bats for men as high as $500 it is hoped we shall hear no more of the women's hat joke. The authorities of the states of Or egon and Washington have spent finjm iu the rbas for Trwoy.
