There are some of the finest specimens of fruit ever produced in Oregon, now hidden away in Vmatilla county cellars. The committee from the Commercial Association hopes to be able to reach the owners of this fruit and induce them to preserve the best of it for the Umatilla county exhibit for the Lewis and Clark fair. The fair opens In June, and the ex hibits must be in place by the lat- ter part of May. The 19Û4 fruit crop must be depended upon tor all the exhibits. It will be too early to se cure anything except berries, from the 1905 crop. It is important that the best specimens be saved this win ter. If the committee doesn’t see you and you have something suitable for exhibit, notify S. H. Forshaw. of Pen dleton. and he will immediately call on you. This is all for the glory of Vmatilla county. The county court has appropriated money for the pur pose of collecting an exhibit, but the I hearty co-operation of the people is necessary to get the best results from the moiiey. It would be a ludicrous sight to see modern democrats dressed in the knee pants, silver buckles, velvet coat and cocked hat of Thomas Jefferson's day. It is scarcely less ludicrous to see them wearing the mental and polit ical habiliments of Jefferson amid 20th century splendors of progress and expansion. Democracy is noth- Ing if it Is not flexible. It is noth- Ing If it does not keep pace with the unfolding emergencies of the times. There is a mission for the right kind of democracy. By striking the right keynote, the democrats can ral ly to their banner - all the scattered reform forces and thousands of re- publicans who are dlssatlsfled. But democrats can’t accomplish this by speaking from 1 the Thomas Jefferson pedestal, Times have been changed by the growth of the nation. A platform demanding government ownership of the great public utili ties will bring the scattered reform forces together—it is the hope of democracy. e V... If the democrats don't adopt this advance policy- the republicans will do so, soon, and win on it, as usual. President Roosevelt counts the un- finished term which he has filled for President McKinley as one term, and says emphatically that he will not be a candidate again.
