Tke Investigating Committee at Salem tremor were, a few day ago, hard at work. They charge that $24,000 too much has been allowed to Sherids lor conveying convicts to the penitentiary and lunatics to the asy lum. None of the Committee are lawyers end we venture the assertion that not one dollar has been allowed more than the law gives for the puqiosc mentioned and we feci assured that the Courts will sustain Mr. Chadwick in all his allowance. The first law on the subject was passed In 1872; another was passed in 1874 and still anoth er.i'n 1876. The law or 1S74 did not repeal thecr of 1872. The matter will have to be 4atlgated in the Courts where it frboeid have been done in the first place sail this useless Committee would have been saved the trouble of this winter's sit- tiuc and the State the expense. WeacntJons believe that the State officials should be investigated as charges had been made against them oT a grave character, butwej believe that grand juries and the judiciary suould do the investigating and then there -would bac been power to punish those who were found guilty or wronps and the money overdrawn could have been recov ered by the State, but this Committee has bo such power, and when it gets through nothing will be cained except the fact may be ascertained that the people have been fbbbed. 'The Courts will then have to in vestigate the matter all the same as if there never had been a Committee Again we predict that when this Com tnittee gets lhrouch with their labors that will be the end T the matter. No officer Mill be punished. No funds returned to the State. No criminal proceediagt be commenced if Dave Tbutnjfsoa can prevent it, and nothing will be heard ot the matter again 'till the next political campaign, when it will break out afresh and will be rung from one end of the State to the other. Now it is commenced let it be pushed through. Let ever officer that the Com laittee reflects on be indicted by the grand !nrr or Marion countr- It is the risht or the accused to demand an investigation asd they should do so immediately, and let the law be enforced- Wedo not believe these ex-officials of the Stats are guilty as charged, but should they prove to be they should be punished. "Let bo guilty man escape." . Tkat Stecltadc. A BMetiag or the stockholders or the Pcsdletoa stockade was called Saturday Dec. 7, but as Circuit Court was ia session at that time and the Justices Courts ran slag besides the Sheriff having trial of the rights of 'property, the people were too ach eegaced to give the stockade subject any 'Attention, and in consequence there U is to hover round the Iualan rear in ! their raids and thus guard and protect them while engaged in their fiendish work of murder and robbery. Now Is the time to make ready. Stock-uolbkh. A BurHlngSliame. From Mr. Smith, a well known citizen or this county who rides near Island City, who came across the mountains a few days ago with freight teams, we learn that the condition of the remains or the mur dered men, Myers, Smith and McLaughlin who were hurndly covered with a little earth and rubbish where they fell by the hands of the marauding Indians last July Is such as to cause a blush or shame to mantle the cheefc or all who know the fact. Mr. Smith informs us that he and other teamsters camped near the scene of the butchery and visited the burial snot of Myers and Smith, who were neighbors when at home, companions on the road. and now sleep side by side in death, and found that the coyotes and other mountain animals had dug holes in the shallow cov ering o( earth thrown over the remains by soldiers with trowel bayonets and kail dragged portions of ti c skeletons lorth and devoured the flesh. The ground fiw some distance around the burial spot present ing sickening evidences or lac nercecon- or these wild bcas ts over the re mains or two or Union County's xlrst-clafcs citizens. One thigh bone, one arm and numerous small bones scattered around with the boots and portions of the cloth ing arc sad relicts or the frightful scenes that were enacted last summer; and will no doubt be again rchrarted as soon as warm weather and early gnus thaws the Indians out sufficiently to enabla them to keep two or three days march in advance of01d day after to morrow" and hit harm, less army. There must be somebody criminally negligent ia regard to the coo dition of these well known citizens and the finger of popular scom shou'd seek and point oct those at lault. Mr. Smith was the owner of one of the finest mule teams and rnost complete outfit on the Umatilla road, and has a brother living in this county who has been engaged in freighting with the team since his brothers death, driving pat the place where the bones of his mnrdered rrlative are now made the grand prize of snarling and snap ping packs of hungry cayrtcs and 31 r. Myers was possessed of ample means to defray all the necessary expenses of a de cent burial, and we feel assured that a gen erous public woald long since have de cently interred the lart mortal remains of strangers, had the people believed those whose immediate duty should have been to attend to this matter would have proven thss recreant to their trusts. We hope some humanitarian will take this Batter in hand and have no doubt sufficient means could readily be raised to defray all the necessarr expense or giving the scattering remains or these men decent christiaa bur ials in some public cemetery.
