A few weeki ago a German by tie name of Surbecker, employed in tie forge dqiartment of tie Dotct Sump ing corajKiny, Cambritlge, ilajw., vnx. made tie rictim of a practical joke that box since resulted ia its becoming in tone and being incarcerate! in tie lun atic asjlom at Worcester. Tie facts in tie case aa gleaned from traatwortij nources, are brieflj as follows : In ti department where Starbecker waj em plojed are several jocng men who were acjuainted with his eccentricities, and frequently made him tie butt for all iettj- jokes. One day one of tie gang took tie German aide and told htm tiat in a certain cemeterr in Loogwood tbtzre was. a grave in which several tioa- aand doMars were buried, together with tie body of a man who had a peculiar religious belief while in life, and which corresponded with that of Starbecker. He wan led to believe that br risitinz the cemetery on a certain night and re peating portions of his cited ail would be made clear to him, and the money would be his. He proceeded to act on tii saggestions cf tie fellows, and one dark night walked over, accompanied by them to the cemetery, as directed, and went to a grave in the remote pari ot tie yard. Here was told to kneel be fore a tombstone and reteat tie names of certain gods, and when tie came of the nght one was reached, he would know all a spirit would appear and designate tie hiding place of tie money. hue engaged his devotions, one of tta voun men approached lie stone envel oped in a white sheet. This had tie) eifect oi frightening tie man, who start ed to run away; but ie had proceeded only a few yards when he ran into tie arms of a figure clothed in a black dca In The poor fellow fell in a fit. EecoTer- ing from this, he started on a keen run for home, reaching it about midnight. nearly dead from fright- From that sight Starbecker has been more or less affected in his mind. He has neglected his work, and seemed to be im pressed with the idea that tie money would be his sometime. He went to tie factory recently with a lot ef docsmests drawn np in German, and wished them trans laud into Ertglhh. It was then dis covered that he was insane, and he was taken to tie asylum. Tie young men Patrick Crowley, Barney Welch, Pat rick Flood and Daniel Hayes are very mech concerned over tie affair, and heartily wish tienuejves out of it. Surbecker has a wife and two children. The Duke or CoaajaiU heard a story tie ether night which goes a long war to explain tie Data of ConnaBght's popularity in tie army. Use of toe xnnces teilsw occers was about to leave his regiment? Calling to bd turn tarewell, lit Royal Highness was induced to promise him his carte. It was to arrive on the night before the otSccr took his leave, bet it did not come. Early next morning tie oScer was riding out o barracks, when, just as he reached the gates, he heard his name shouted by a breathless runner. Turning round he saw Prince Arthur, noshed and panting; rushing along at full speed, and hoHiag up, in explana tion of his tmprinoely haste, .tie prom ised photograph. Something had hap- pened to prevent its presentation on tie night, and tic Prince had turned out early in order that with his own. Bps he might make apology for the apparent breach of promise. Very few men, I imagine, would have taken, that trouble about a portrait which could be sent by post, and I doubt if there is another prince of our own or any other reigning family who would have done so. Xo body except a prince could have done it without appearing fussy and .undigni fied. Bet its tiougitfuleess and del icacy made his conirade-in-arms all the prouder. It is no wonder that he is spoken of not only 'kindly but enthu siastically. London Coi respondent. IICSTtXG OS THE PtADCS. A. CAT ar rived here yesterday that is worth no ticing.
