Ill bcalth compels tlie undersigned to withdraw from the newspaper business. Those gentlemen in Umatilla county who hare been our friends we thank for their kind acts and assistance; o! thoc who have not been our friends we hare nothing to say. The "East Oregonian Publisliinj Cosapanv," succeed us. M. P. Bctx. SALUTATORT. As will be seen from our columns this week, Mr. Bull retires, and the East Ohe cosian Publishing Company succeed him. All subsriptions due are placed in the hands of Turner & Bailey for collection, and all those who are In arrears are earnest ly requested to csmc forward and settle, so that the old books may be closed up. The paper will continue as heretofore Demo cratic in politics and as a Democratic pa per it will be firm and positive in support of Democratic measures. Yet we intend to do this In a manner hat will n give,n1 tl,,es n,Je no DCW 5 of oOVnce to those who differ with us In poli.1 tics. In rclizion we are neutral, but will I endeavor to give without prejudice or par tiality all the religious news of the county that we consider of interest te our readers. V.'e intend to conduct the paper ia the in terestsorthe pceple or Umatilla county, and whatever we regard as being conducive to the best interests thereof, ue will pub lic ud publish cheerfully. We cwrnertly ask the aid and kind co-operatloa of the people cT the county, without regard to politics, in our endeavors to sustain a cosn- ty paper. Xo pains, labor, or expense will '. be spared to make the paper interesting and readable. Those who have heretofore 1 contributed to the columns ol the paper j are requested to continue their corrcspoo-! deuce, and it is hoped that others from all parts of the county will give Ihejpeal news from their respective sections each week. The paper is a paper for the whole county, and we desire la know "and publish every, thing of importance that transpires In the county. With pride we look cpoa the resources of this county. From the State line near Walla Walla for twenty ailes south, till vou strike the Isdlaa reservation, immense fields of wheathave been grown, averaging from 30 to 50 and as high as 75 bushels to the acre. About Weston the country looks like one vast field of wheat. The threshers have been busy, but rains have interrupted work, though little loss will accrue to the thrifty faming community still it occas ions delay, and time with this class is men. ey, still teas after team reloads at our worthy tewsssen's mill the golden wheat, which brings the farmer 70 cents, a fair re muneraliea for his toll, though we wish it was SO eeats and one dollar a bushel which it surely would be but for the land and water locked country that we live in. Whea canals oa the Columbia are open ad the railroad is completed, with our soil and climate, we expect to compete with all the wheat growing countries of the world. Wheat to-day at Umatilla is 90 and 85 cesti per bushel, but the lack of transportation will deter most farmers from delivering their crops at that place, conse quently the Byers-Beagle-Livermore mill of this place must be run for the next year at her HUaosi caplcity. But time, railroads asd other internal improvements will at last, we hope, make all things eyen. RAILROAD XEETLSG. ParsBsat to Botice, Messrs. S. G. French asd Dasl. Chaplin, Directors or the B. We unite with others In considering this the most important enter prise to advance the intern! of Oregon and also or the whole country it will jiass through, and only differ from many others who now urge the importance of the en terprise by having always maintained the same view. -a- ., n - . j the most useful we can possibly have, and as this land grant is necessary for its com pletion we would crge its exteatioo for mat purpose, as lias been UTgetf by the State Grange at the two last annual scs-j sions, with a provbo protecting the inter ests oi actual sciinrs. ana aiannrr proviso . limiting Uie price at 50 per acre to all actual settlers in the future. In short, we crge that speculators shall cot be permit- L ted to absorb and monopolize the public lands, and the far better way would be for the government to rrUln the jands in own possession, selling the odd sections at the same price as its own wnus mi c-1 counting to the company for the proceeds. J It was a crime agalnt a Just public pol-1 icy, irom toe cm, tnai an raiirosa iaou ( grists were not so made and guarded that j actual settlers could have lands at not to exceed $2 50 per acre. Such a course would have sufficiently bene filed the rail, roads, and would have been of incalculable benefit to the people at large. As lbe age of land grabbing is past, we trust prudence and common boocstr will direct the course of Congress In the future. Wc desire to see the Northern Pacific road receive sufficient encouragement to scccre Its construction and at the same time to know the interests of the actual aelilcr the pioneer who ventures into the wilder, ness will not be forgotten.
